White Mould on Cambodians?

Having stumbled across a type of mould growing on the surface of a strain of Cambodian Cubensis - It appears present as an opaque area more on the right side of the tub:



In this case I have used Bods unmodified tek and don't know the cause or the type of mould.
On Close inspection:



An comparing to mould-free specimens on the other side:



If anyone has any ideas, then that would be great :confused:

Oh I think I am following you -

You reduce the air and increase C02 levels and you drive the fruiting process back into colonisation rather than fruiting?  Hence the white fuzz is just the environmental conditions turning the mushrooms back into mycelium?

I've had that problem with cubes before, at least your picture looks like the same thing. For me increasing air movement didn't help but a spray with 3% peroxide (from any drug store) solved the problem, check out this thread:

I only got the white film on pins, as they matured- grew larger- the film would disappear. When the film was especially thick it would halt growth of the pins and they would eventually die. The film would form without any accompanying signs contamination.

Peroxide itself did not seem to harm even the smallest pins but gave them a chance to grow to the point where the film would no longer reappear. I found that it worked best if the pins were sprayed early when the film starts to form, rather than waiting too long.

Give a small section of filmed over pins a good peroxide spray and compare them to another section of filmed over pins that are just sprayed with water.

noooo. and that would be a waste of the subs energy. its in fruiting, its fruiting.. you dont revert/back track.

the white fuzz is myc growing over the aborted fruits because the conditions are crummy. you need more air. id remove the lid for a few hours then flip it to loosely cover the tub. dont mist that either.

WHY SPRAY PEROXIDE!? that might get rid of the white film but not address why it is accruing.

ime whenever a tub acts like OPs, as in the white film, it is from hidden contams or superduper shitty conditions.
just by the color of the caps on the healthy shrooms id say you are way to wet and stale(too much water, not enough evap)

Why would you spray myc with peroxide? All the hard work put into growing it and you gonna just merc it... lol. It is an indication of high co2 levels. Un modified tubs suffer this. As there is not good FAE. Simply cracking the lid and making sure there is a fan going in the grow area (not pointed directly at the tub) will fix this issue.

If increasing air exchange doesn't help its certainly not going to hurt to spray a small number of pins with 3% peroxide to see what happens. It looks like AgarStudents "white film" problem is pretty mild anyway.

I mean I see the TC badge but now I got to doubt how you earned it. Peroxide has no place in this hobby.  Period. It kills mycellium. Then recommending it for fuzzy feet to boot???? GTFOH. Someone needs to pull that badge.

Not every person agrees 100% like there is some TC test you have to get all the right answers to get your tag. The entire purpose is well rounded advice not dogmatic robot talk. We could just get an automated bot to respond if that were the case.

She can post when and where she feels like it. Maybe its not the worlds best advice that's come out of a TC but guess what im guilty of giving less than perfect advice from time to time too.

Yea peroxide harms mycelium but if you want to get your ugly fruits suffering from bad conditions to look better would peroxide do the job melting off that stem fuzz? Yes.
Would i personally do it or suggest it, no.

Those blackish pins with film on them are obviously aborting or are already aborts. The white film is just mycelium growing off of it because the pins are dying and it seeks to revert back to being just myc. This isn't normal either but bad conditions may be causing it. Maybe the sub was too wet, maybe there's a serious lack of air exchange, maybe both.

I started my shroom growing hobby like a lot of others, exclusively growing cubes. I did my first  cube grow 2 years before I registered with Shroomery.
Cubes always worked for me- never had any big problems. I always got plenty of product- enough for my needs- contaminations were never a big problem either. This white coating on caps started happening a couple of years ago. It may be a contamination but i’m not sure.

The consensus opinion on this site is to increase air exchange. Well I had plenty of that- with the grows  being done in greenhouse as well as SGFC. So the standard answer didn't help me.
Peroxide appears to be an old school treatment that most here think shouldn't even be considered.
I've done enough grows that I can think for myself so I thought to try the peroxide, low and behold it removed the filmy coating on the pins and allowed them to mature. This isn't my imagination, I compared before and after & side by side- i'm at least as critical thinking as the next person.

This may or may not help the OP but it isn't going to hurt to try on a few pins. Sometimes the consensus advise doesn't work, I hope that some can be open to other views.

Lets dig a little deeper here. Those aborts needed air, but is that why they aborted or was it lack of water availability?  Doesnt seem to be anything growing on them so why did peroxide work for Mary? Shocked the pins alive like a defibrillator? Hydrated them?

When did you start seeing the film Mary? Is it not just universal veil?

I wouldn't use h2o2 to get rid of 'fuzzy feet', but I can understand why it worked on Mary's 'white film' ordeal. The world of microbiology is vast and in no way fully documented. It is pretty well consensus that h2o2 weakens mycelium. Since cubes are a pretty robust species, it makes sense that the already established cubes survived the h2o2 onslaught, while the 'white film' contam did not (whatever it was).

A situation that I have run into more than once with cubensis pins looked much like what Agar Student showed. This is what I had:

I would not call them aborts- at least in my case peroxide removed the film that covered the caps and the pins returned to growth phase.

What I observed-
Primordia would form without any film; they would grow, then some of them would develop the white film. The appearance of the white film on the pins seemed to coincide with a halt in growth. I found that if I sprayed them with 3% peroxide early enough the film would disappear and growth would resume. If I let them sit for days covered with the film they would die even after I removed the film with peroxide.
Its all a matter of degree- all light film would not halt the growth of pins but a heavy film would stop their growth and if not treated the pins would abort.
Peroxide did not seem to harm the densely packed form of mycelia that makes up the primordial mushroom but it did remove the thin white film that covered the caps.

As I mentioned above, I had this problem with cubensis grows where air movement was quite high already so I had to find my own solution.

Since you're an agar student, would you be a sweetheart and drop one of those 'infected' pins on a plate to see what grows out? :popcorn:

Right now I'm really confused about this, we all deserve to know what is going on here. :typing:

Problem with trying to dab some of that film on to a plate is that plenty of other microbes will also be present if you swab from a "clean cap" or a filmy one. You'll see a mess either way.
