pan cambo attempt
    #25540039 -

i have a panaeolus cambodginiensis spore syringe that was made a year ago but a reputable source found on here. i have sheep/cow manure, verm, brf, coffee but no gypsum. my question is could i make cakes out of these ingredients and inject spores straight into my manure cake jars? how necessary is gypsum for this species? (most teks on here have included this), i have also never used a year old spore syringe is it likely no good? (the spores are in a mass) and how well does injecting spores straight into the cake like pf tek? my plan was to birth by just simply opening the jars and then casing, and putting them in a FC. i have no experience with this species but have had lots of like with cubes using both pf and bulk methods.  i have done lots of searching but have had a hard time finding answers to these specific questions. any info will be greatly appreciated. this site is a fountain of knowledge.

thank you, good luck to you as well. how essential is sterilizing the cakes in a pc?

I've never gone that route personally, though one of those links is titled "pan cyans without a PC"

my first go isn't doing well, only seeing mold so far. think I would be better off getting horse manure from one of the local horses. This store bought steer manure was prone to being pasty.

Also think I'm gonna PC a q-tip, put a drop of spore solution on it and use that to swipe some agar plates. Never had luck just squirting solution directly onto agar, at least not with pans.

Make an inoculation loop, should work better than a swab with spore solution

You think so? I always feel weird using them. Maybe my retail one isn't the best, its a very thin piece of wire.

I don't have much experience using them so I'm all ears. I just picture a q-tip drinking in the spore solution as opposed to a freshly flamed tiny piece of wire. It seems like it wouldn't hold onto the liquid or the spores as well.

This is just my experience, and I've only grown Pan Cyanescens and Bisporus, but:

-Spore syringes from reputable vendors only last a couple months at the most before becoming unviable even under refrigeration. Prints last longer. I know other people have syringes that are several years old that still stay viable, so take from that what you will.

-not having gypsum isn't a big deal

-while the following threads are among the best Panaeolus Cambodginiensis grows on this entire site, I personally haven't had any luck fruiting Pans off cakes. I might get a couple pins that abort, but never mature fruits. I would personally recommend bulk trays, as they've fruited extremely well for me while cakes did not at all.

What stands out to me is the extremely high level of constant air exchange and humidity through the use of an air pump rated for 100 gallons bubbling in a water reservoir. I use a similar method with a weaker pump (10 gallons in a 90qt tote) and get excellent Pan fruits.

-I also always recommend the following lid tek if you haven't done that already. There's so many points you can fail in this hobby, this at least gets it right in the beginning.

just wanted to come back and thank you for the tip. The loop I have will hold a drop of water nicely in the middle of the loop, which seems to defy the law of gravity but I'm not asking questions when reality does me favors. much easier to work with than a qtip, you're correct.

you having any luck op?

I started 5 cakes on the second of october and they only just now seem to have germinated. Looks like clean myc but sceptical due to the timeframe. Though it has been cold.

is sceptical really spelled with a c? I swear the autocorrect is tripping lately. all of a sudden it only likes European spellings

I knocked up 10 jars, (spore solution not LC) all of them showed growth within a couple weeks. some just stopped growing after they got the size of a quarter. a couple got contaminated. i have 5 left, all of then are about 95-100% colonized. i should note that the all the jars only colonized at 1 or 2 of the inoculation sites. This contributed to the elongated colonization times. If all the the inoculation points were successful i believe i wouldn't have lost some of those jars to contams, as some of the mycelium was fairly aggressive , but one sided.. Im going to wait till the end of the week and make my decision on how i will fruit. I had my jars in a box next to a floor vent. the jars were staying around 75-77 degrees. this may be why mine got a headstart on yours. Ive read that pans like slightly higher temps than cubes.

after realizing how futile trying this sort of method is, i forked out some money and invested in agar, LC, and grain supplies. Time to step my game up. I will keep this grow going out of curiosity and if it goes well, or i at least get fruits i will post back.

here are some photos of my fully colonized cakes. Im going to give them a couple more days for consolidation, and then fruit. Still trying to decide on a method of fruiting these. crumble in a tray or fruit like pf? decisions decisions..

Personally I would crumble them into bulk substrate. Pf fruiting pans is hit or miss for most people and you'll get a larger yield if you take care of them.

Thanks pariah, i was actually just looking at a couple of stonesuns grows and was thinking the same. he does a grow where he crumbles the cakes into a tray then cases. i would assume crumbling to bulk, would increase my yield compared to the method I just mentioned?

futile? I've done all the methods (for other species) but had settled on this one. See a tek you liked? Just curious

I seem to just have the worst luck with pans no matter what I try though, so don't base anything you do on my experiences. Can never get germination on agar. At least I get to live vicariously through the countless noobs who have gotten fruits while I continue to struggle :wtfsonic:

this is the closest I've been, I have actual mycelium now (i hope)

Well i mean out of 10 or 12 jars i only ended up with 4 that fully colonized without bacterial problems. thats not a great trade off.. although my spore solutions was over a year old. By the sounds of your struggles however, has got me thinking i did ok. i am assuming i would have much better luck with LC, or agar.

update
so i crumbled 3 of those jars into 2 trays, layering it with 50/50 pasteurized bulk. with the last jar i cased, and introduced into fruiting conditions ( 95-99% RH, 77-80 degrees). its been 2 days and im seeing small amounts of growth on both the trays and the cake. hoping the mycelium will take hold and this wasn't all for nothing.
