Do you think that maybe they're just freaking out about all the school shootings here and trying to prevent something similar happening there? I do.

Their surveillance technology probably isn't as sophisticated and automated as here. Our govt doesn't have to resort to asking us to rat on each other, we're self-ratting.

Xul thinks that crimes motivated by hate shouldn’t be reported. :facepalm:

I remember back in the day when Muslims were the terror threat -  and not trump supporters - we were told that political correctness was keeping people from reporting dangerous and suspicious activity. Now that it’s right wingers who we need to be worried about, reporting on your neighbors is North Korea-like behavior.

I mean speech in everyday life and on forums/Internet.

Even if someone yelled "Allah" before a crime, there is no need to define his words in some legal term of hate speech. What would be the point of that?

Are you suggesting that anything someone says before committing a crime should be considered hate speech for everyone else?

Let me explain.

A hate crime is a general term, which includes differentiating modes such as "speech," harrassment, or perhaps general violence.

Keep in mind, on the internet, we use speech, which is where the article drew its focus. Thus, hate speech is part of the topic at hand, which I don't even know why you are debating.

Yeah.  Many cases of hate crime involved bullying on social media. 

It's kind of like how many cases of vandalism involve spray paint.

In some places, cyberbullying is a crime too.  Fine.

I don't see how this is foreboding for Europe.  And, I still don't see how Europeans are being encouraged to rat on each other.

I believe hate speech laws in Europe are spiraling out of control. Now children are being told it's okay to report each other for "hateful" speech against a "social group." This is sickening to me.

Conversely, if a man walked around punching only Asians, it could possibly be considered a hate crime. These crimes are sickening.

Violence is bad, speech should be free, and Europe is destroying their own free speech by encouraging the reporting of neighbors, fining speech, and jailing offenders.
