Yeah that's all good effort but unfortunately it doesn't do what you think. Open air is full of contaminants, and the slightest air currents are what deliver them to your substrate. Your best bet, if you were to continue this practice (I don't recommend), is to do it in a SAB, which if you don't have already, could be your initial problem.

Is there a good way to help reduce bacterial infections? I used denatured alcohol to flame my needle and used 99% iso to wipe it down

That's where I inoculated them I made a sab there's a picture in the comment with it with all the supplies I used. After inoculation I moved them into the incubation chamber

Incubation is not necessary, higher temps favor contams. The whole process is optimal around 75, you could do 77 for spawn without problems too. 70% alcohol is better than 91%. Those are just little things tho. Sterile technique is ultimately your best bet. Watch all contact when working in your SAB, alcohol wipe before flaming, don't suck in any air, don't touch anything but your inoculation point with the needle once it cools. That all helps but the other big thing is PCing long enough. At least 90 minutes. I typically do 120. All of these things are little pieces to one big efficiency puzzle, and once you refine your procedures you'll see better results.

For sure, thank you again. So my next question is are these two jars still viable and if you or someone is willing to look over my crop to "inspect" them I would appreciate it. I was thinking about after getting it down more moving to Bulk if anyone has an opinion on that

I think bulk is easier:shrug:

However cakes in a SGFC is a good way to start because it teaches you directly how to make myc happy. It's a high FAE chamber and makes you have to watch your cakes' surface and hydration more dilligently

@noisecontrol. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I didnt mean YOU told op to throw it out. I was just talking in general.

Last year a ton of people told me to throw out a bacterial mono. Glad i didnt cuz the first flush was like 1500g wet. Crazy. I posted it and shamed everyone that was an "expert" that told me to chuck it. Lol. So, sorry. Didnt mean u.

No worries and that's the exact reason I keep them too, unless I need space. The only thing it hurts is colonization speed and longevity.

When you harvest from a tub that has a bacterial contamination, dont you worry about any health risk when consuming the mushrooms? I'm just assuming it would make you sick.

When I think of harvesting from a contaminated tub all I get is the Pepto Bismol jingle playing in the back of my head haha.

Flame sterilize with 91%, use 70% on your hands...Don't flame sterilize and then wipe with alcohol... run a drop of solution out of the syringe in the SAB before innoculating... wiping with alcohol only sanitizes, and  I think RR said something like "it's like taking a shower, then wiping shit on your face"... lol, vivid expression, but it portrays an important point... alcohol also does not kill spores, and you could inadvertently introduce contaminants during inoculation ... definitely need a  SAB, or you're wasting time, money, and resources IMO... you can spawn and fruit in open air,  but this entire process depends on acquiring and introducing clean spawn...

Today there's been an update with 3 of the jars over night. (Amazed at the speed of change) 2 of the jars have what seem like healthy pins in them both appear like stems with a cap on the top of them with multiple other spots forming as well. Unfortunately I only have a picture of the one of the two jar that appear to be pinning well.
The jar thats in question. The sight got a little bigger with kinda a light brown tint to it I have two pictures of it.
The other jars aren't pinning yet and still have some medium to grow into which I expect to take 3 days at this point.
Keep in mind turning down the brightness helps with the glare of the jar

First two of the healthy one. Last two of the jar in question (which has a fee pins as well as the spot I'm worried about)

Right which I thought about during the process. that's what my initial research into how to start said and I've been still trying to figure out a good cleaner that will kill spores but won't leave chemical residue that might harm the mycelium. I've been using peroxide spray and Lysol to clean the tubs. I flamed in-between every other jar. They were done in a sab and are in one currently.

Pins prior to full colonization is indicative of contamination... not looking healthy either... Neither one of them IMO

:frown: shame. Oh well, live and learn I suppose.  Can you point out what looks unhealthy about them or have pictures of healthy myc. For future reference and attempts. The one is fully but only by a few days and the one I don't have pictures of is as well.  I appreciate the feedback.

Thick, creamy, and sweaty are pretty indicative of bacteria... color is off also... healthy spawn will look less like melting ice cream and more like cotton candy or dense clouds lol

For sure, well I guess the next question is naturally, can they be brought to fruiting.  Will this infection contaminate the others currently or during fruiting? How will the fruits be? Will they all be contaminated or just some of the fruits? As you said if they are questionable you can make tea with them?

Nah it doesn't "just happen" that's bad info and gives people the idea that inadequate procedure will produce impressive results. No disrespect just need to be careful what we share here as the novice is impressionable until he/she learns from their own experiences. Those jars are likely bacterial, that's why they've pinned before fully colonizing. When properly hydrated and sterilized your jars would be ready in half that time. The error would be in your grain prep, likely not sterilized long enough. You probably soaked your grains ya?

If you have found a way to go from spore to fully colonized cake in 10 days I would love it if you could share this with us

Not if they wont colonize: these jars aren't even half way there... if you wanna give it a shot, I'd shake them to thoroughly distribute the colonized portions, and see if they recover: I'm betting they won't... whether the fruits infect or not will depend on several factors including the severity of the infection, genetics/health of the culture, and conditions... I typically eat with my eyes, and these mushrooms are no different for me: if they're visually appealing, they're probably good... if the sub is known to be bacterial, tea is probably best anyways... if there are obvious blotches on the fruit, I'd not even make tea with them personally

Either way, I'd start something fresh

The misunderstanding was in what op was colonizing. Cakes from syringe very likely wouldn't happen in ten days, especially considering two weeks of consolidation is ideal after they're fully colonized.  I think my fastest cake from syringe was like 17 days (?) I haven't done a cake in years so that's questionable. Grain I can have done in 10 days tho. And if you're talkin LC it's almost too fast lol
