Late stage mold!!!!!!

hey shroomopolis,

i was wondering if any of you have had mold show up on BRF cakes after the cakes are 60 to 80% colonized?

i would think by that point the mycelium would have a stronghold over the substrate and not allow competing organisms grow.

mind you that these cakes in particular where dropped from a significant height and my dry verm layer was not optimal.

however, they were growing well, although somewhat slow, but still healthy. now. i have black and bluish/green mold in one of the jars.

any thoughts?

100% normal. toss it.

If you're putting spore syringes to a food source, you're going to get contam. They're not sterile. Cakes are a hope and prayer. They're resilient but sometimes the contams win or show up later though.

You could try to save a little myc to put to agar but it looks bacterial too. Maybe open the jar and top fruit it. Leave your dry verm layer and treat it as a casing.

Isolate it very well if you're planning on fruiting mold inside. :sun:

I do NOT recommend birthing the questionable cakes, washing away the uncolonized parts, and fruiting in a separate FC than the healthy cakes. Oh no, now I put the idea in your head!

thanks for the input guys. since im relatively new to this hobby, i have been keeping contaminated substrates to examine under a microscope, just to get a feel for what im looking at.

one day after those pics where taken, there was a heavy presence of black and bluish mold in one of the cakes. all of the jars are isolated in another room, far from all of my good and fruiting cakes.

i took the worst cake out to examine it and found that it was all but completely colonized through and through.

i have never attempted birthing contaminated cakes so I plan on doing so, as i said, just to get a feel of what contaminated fruits look like.

This makes me think sterilization temperatures were not held long enough at the center. How long did you steam them for?

Edit: if you're determined to fruit them I wouuld burry them outside beneath a half inch of soil. Though temperatures might be kinda low now depending where you live.

i have to go back through my log book, but i believe that batch was steamed for 90 minutes. however, the lid was not as tight as i would of likes. i have since been doing my jars for 120 minutes and so far. no contam. so far...

the next item on my shopping list is a pressure cooker. since i am an avid mushroom hunter, i spent a good amount on my microscope.

i have been doing a lot of different combination of things, just to get a feel of how certain things work. i keep very detailed notes and try a wide assortment of different methods.

some of my results are expected, so far i have yet to discover something totally unexpected.

i found that since i do not have a PC, the best method is to inoculate in my modified SAB and then leave them in there to colonize
