Black mold

Ok so due to massive amounts of rain i am starting to see black mold appear on the bathroom ceiling, nothing bigger that a pencil width an size, i have a leak in the roof which is causing problems, no money to fix it so im left waiting for it to fall down.

Question is, can i still try and grow in these conditions, i have always suspected mold behind the walls and what not but never seen it visibility,

Is it possible to produce a fruit in these conditions if so how can i take extra precautions

The same precautions you have to take anyway. The air is already full of contamination, a little more aint going to stop anything

What Bodhi ^ said. But for your own health and safety, I highly recommend dealing with the mold problem ASAP. What you have is one or more of the 50 species of Stachybotrys (genus). Some species of Stachy can in a mild case cause flu-like symptoms, and in the worst case kill you (it happens). Chlorine based solutions can kill any patches that appear on your interior walls/ceiling etc., but that won't reduce the effects of the toxins that are being produced by the unseen colonies that are lurking about elsewhere.

Hmmm so its still possible with preventative maintenance? Its a rent house so no way can i get it all replaced just wanna manage it enough to where i can produce. I blame it mostly on months of rain an no ventilation seeing as how its been 5 years with no visible signs of black mold yet.

Tried some bleach spray and soap to clean it off which helped but just cant get behind the walls themselves,

Your landlord should be fixing the mold, and especially should be fixing the water related issue causing it.

My last land lord sold the building after mold was discovered. That's how bad it can be.

I understand amigo. Bleach spray will do the trick in keeping things from getting out of control -it's actually what the Center for Disease Control recommends. The only way to prevent that nasty stuff is to keep things dry unfortunately. If you know for sure where the roof leak is maybe a quick patch? However these things are often a pain in the arse because the water can be coming in here, but the leak is way over there someplace.

As far as growing goes, lots of people have success in 'dirty' conditions. Myself, I avoid much of my work during the hottest most humid months of the year (July & early August where I live). And as for yourself, I say go for it -just use the best precautions and teks you can.

You don't necessarily have a leak or mold in the walls. Most houses are built with the insulation on the inside.  The dew point will occur between the cooler and warmer space. Inside your wall. Water collects. Mold grows.

But it could just be wet from the shower and totally superficial.

Ladys night: yeah that was my first reaction, hot showers cold air. Ima put a fan in the room an just leave it on to see if that helps.


Christopera: i would love to have landlords help but both are on fixed government income an both have cancer as they push 85 next year, pretty much a no go on that end.

What would be my main concerns if i was to try and restart a grow. Should I completely avoid the bathroom when operating? Use a dehumidifier? Or just say fuck it and do it like i did before?

I'd clean it best I could,  avoid the bathroom for any SAB work (probably not the most ideal room in the house regardless of mold) but like mentioned before, once spawned with  clean spawn your substrate will be fairly resistant to even heavy sporeload... we spawn in open air and thus our substrate is full of contaminants from that day forward... we generate spawn in sterile conditions(still air or laminar flow really)  so that we have a healthy living culture present that has a chance to colonize the substrate before contaminant spores have a chance to germinate and grow to be an issue... I'd say go for it!

Yeah the renter/landlord in the house I bought didn't have a dehumidifier in the basement for a year and a water heater with a slight leak. I ripped up and threw the wood base of the heater and replaced it.

I got a dehumidifier down there now. Anyways I get black mold growing in my toilet on the rim if I don't use it often, I even seen some growing on my old butter yesterday.

So the spore load Is fairly high in my seemingly clean house, it's pretty damn dust free but obviously it's there and I'm starting to see it less and less as the months go by.

I have seen some old posts were mushboy and pasty talk about their extremely dusty/moldy houses and still pull of nice grows and spawn so that alone should tell ya it comes down to your sterile technique over all.

Clean spawn is king.


I get a 95% success rate, one case of grey mold so far, one mystery contam and 6 of trich on 1st flushes due to a bad plate from moving. It seems to happen often on 3rd flushes here with trich but killing mushroom subs seems to be that ones specialty. Grey and black molds though, extremely rare on my subs but often every ware else and yes butter. :justdontknow:

Just use good sterile technique in a SAB or if ya blessed to have a flow hood. I wouldn't expect your subs to last the test of time but it's diminishing returns anyways.

From what I've gathered it's Sterile technique/Clean spawn > genetics> Substrate prep and type > Spore load and what type.

I love you guys, i was so depressed thinking great now i can never do this. I wiped the visible parts away with bleach water an put a fan in bathroom to help circulate air, so far so good nothing came back yet.

My biggest problems are trich. It always gets to point of pinning an making you all excited only to stall and turn green, went from agar transfered 3 times till I thought was clean, then wbs to coir with 7-8 day colonization speeds but then 5 weeks an no pins i just gave up, ima chuck it up to genetics but idk. Perfect description of rhizomorphic mycelium but nada. Course the spores were 3 years old so that may have been factor.

Wanna do it again an the black mold popped up so figured I would ask

Dude you should see my house I have a big problem with damp, not so bad in the summer but now coming in to winter it'll start getting bad again. I have to scrub 1 wall with bleach and repaint every spring but other than the usual mould on the odd agar plate it doesn't cause much of a problem. SAB, heater/AC off, kitchen/bathroom cleaner and 70% iso and you're good to go.

I used to get black mold around damp window areas during winter, and the bathroom ceiling was aproblem, but once you coat with this paint its sorted for a few years

Do you paint the damp seal directly over the black mould or do you have to scrub it with bleach first?

I bought some mold remover in a spray bottle, the fumes from it were pretty heavy though..Bleach is probably as good. Scrubbed it off and let it dry, gave it a run over with some lightish sandpaper, then gave it a few coats of the paint; couple coats of damp sealer first, then a couple of the mold paint..bathroom ceiling was done maybe 5 years ago and never had anything show up since:thumbup:

I have heard a couple times bleach is not recommend for wooden or any porise surfaces and best to use products that are designed for mold and fungi.

"Bleach encourages toxic mold growth on porous surfaces because it provides excess moisture.
Bleach contains about 90% water. When you apply bleach to a surface, the chlorine quickly evaporates leaving behind a lot of water. Then, when the water soaks into porous surfaces like wood, it encourages mold growth. So, bleach can actually make your mold problem worse."

If you have mold on walls or wood or any porous surfaces you must fix the problem causing the mold. Or it will come back
