What is a bad trip like? * 1
    #25499479 -

I am immensely curious on this. Some of my frat brothers didn't want to do peyote because they were traumatized by LSD. Words like "paranoia" were common.

Can you please share with me what a bad trip is like? How it feels and what happens?

It feels like insanity and u want it to stop ASAP.

Very uncomfortable, overwhelming, bizarre, disturbing, non-sensical, that sort of thing.

Cant tell if this is serious or not but ill bite.

To me, a bad trip can include all or any combination of the following:
  • Thought loops that seem to never end

  • Time dilation so extreme that makes you feel like you're trapped (similar to thought loops)

  • Evil/menacing hallucinations/faces and or dark/extremely negative thoughts

  • Believing that you have actually gone insane and will never return to "normal consciousness" again

  • Feeling like you shouldnt have taken the drug and you are a drug addict for doing so

  • Feeling like you have died and you will never see any of your friends and loved ones/family members ever again

  • Nausea

  • Physical pain while in the midst of a vision/stream of hallucinations

  • General paranoia that someone is out to get you or cops are going to raid your house and arrest you

  • Anxiety about anything and everything preventing you from relaxing

  • Fighting the experience that it becomes a test of survival/getting through it

  • Being unable to talk/communicate to another person

  • Intense sadness

  • Truths/perspectives that are contradictory and/or difficult to accept without experiencing intense emotional pain

  • General confusion/lack of attention span

  • Remembering past traumas and unsuccessfully understanding/accepting them causing the individual to "slide" into a negative headspace with no hope for returning to a positive or even neutral headpsace

  • Overwhelming fear of the unknown

Did i miss anything? Some of these may lead to a positive outcome but this is the nature of the beast.

Only bad trips I've ever had are when they're too intense/ Overwhelming. otherwise I am fine. Some people see scary things. Some people get paranoid that people know they're high. (No one knows what goes on in your head)

It can be many things, for Terrance McKenna it was fear that it would never end, my only rough trip on Mushrooms it was anxiety and fear that I had messed up my brain as my ego was ripped from me and eventually there was no "I" everything was one.
I learned a lot in that experience, it changed many things in my thought process I was everyone I ever knew I experienced their lives because there was no difference between anyone we were all part of an ego simulator from a 'place' that has no I.

The worst part about having a truly unenjoyable experience is that all you want it to do is end and the whole time you fight it minutes do not go by, time dilation can be insane minutes feeling like hours if the notion of an hour even makes sense.

Edit:well shit infinity squared nailed it, that post should be a sticky.

It's super easy to describe.

It feels like something you don't want to feel and you want to escape it but are unable to.

That's what a bad trip is, thats why acceptance is key.

Once you accept what you think, feel, experience, and observe and be aware of it without attachment, it can alleviate a lot of what causes a bad trip, unless you just do too much and cannot escape the physicakl sensation or mental torment.

But all you can do is surrender and accept and/or suffer and learn.

I've tripped with a guy whos entire trip was terrible. He saw demons attacking him, little girls calling his name, room full of blood etc. He begged for mercy
And there was a huge storm that day so we couldn't even go outside. I had a positive exp while I kept hearing things about demons and stuff

Bad trips on shrooms are much more difficult than on LSD.

An experience with no meaning. All confusion. Psychoticness.

Basically what LC said

--------------------
Something there is mysteriously formed,
Existing before Heaven and Earth,
Silent, still, standing alone, unchanging,
All-pervading, unfailing,
I do not know its name; I call it tao.
If forced to give it a name, I call it
Great (ta). Being great, it flows out;
Flowing out means far-reaching;
Being far-reaching, it is said to return.

It's just a shot away..

Thanks very much for the thorough inventory of features, Infinitysquared, as well as a great definition and advice Enkidu.

Would this have a lot in common with just normal psychosis then?

And it sounds a lot like I had bad trips on weed early in my drugs career where I got fixated on negative and depressing things and couldn't stop focusing on that, but if this even counts that would obviously be a very light version.

Bad trips are still pretty fun once you sober up and can reflect on it from a less insane point.

From people IRL I've heard mention them it always sounded like they were somehow still recovering or it took a while to get over

What everyone said is true.
I've had it with psyches where there is no thoughts involved except physically
it was like if heroin was pure pain.
These experiences have made me more confident in myself because despite being tortured by these drugs I was not deterred from taking them.

If it happens with shrooms or LSD dont get stuck trying to stick your finger down your throat. It wont help.

I've had a few bad trips, in the moment it feels very discerning. But once you've sobered up you pretty much realize everything you were worried about was basically a hallucination.Thats kinda like saying you're still recovering from watching the end of a movie that debuted 10 years ago.

Movies don't really cause trauma though, I developed PTSD to psychedelics after one bad experience, they can be traumatizing in a bad way as well as a positive way.

One trip I had my friend mentally lost it and started chasing us down a mountain letting out grizzly bear roars, because I was already in an ego-less state I convinced myself I was already dead and I was reliving the nightmare of my own death and how my friend killed me. It was terrifying. I remember for a good year or so whenever I would run into  the friend I tripped with on that day I would be sent into a panic attack just from seeing his face, it took me a long time to recover from that one. I would have panic and immense anxiety even thinking about dosing for a good while. Still do, but not nearly as bad.

If movies don’t cause trauma then you obviously haven’t seen the Disney movie zombies that my 4 year old niece watches daily... but also to throw in my two cents on the “bad” trip situation, I’ve found that after a couple of particularly “bad” (in a terrifyingly mind blowing what the fuck kind of way, and also in a full body electrocution sensation for hours kind of way) Trips then for a few times after whenever I would take psychedelics of any sort then the anxiety of repeating the experience would cause a lot of anxiety throughout the whole trip which would make it bounce from good to “bad”. But also this back and forth would seem to remind me that no matter how bad it get it’s still ok.

Also I want to go ahead and throw in the most common negative thing in my trip is that if I’m tripping at 3 to 3:45 a.m. then I get insanely terrified of being abducted by evil sort of extraterrestrial beings.
