Liberty Cap or related moorland psilocybe?
    #25472369 -

Hi, I've been hunting shrooms the last couple of years and have gotten pretty used to what the liberty caps in my moorland finds look like, even the variations between each sometimes being wider I can often instantly identify a any other shroom from a liberty cap by looks.

So far this season in the north-west I've been averaging about 70 libs per hunt, however this hunt I've come across some similar looking mushrooms with a pellicle, but their stem is a fair bit more slimy that libs.

I have heard of another albeit rarer species that grows in the same habitat, and related to liberty's, forgotten the name though.

I'm making a spore print as we speak but here's some pictures for now.

Any ideas?

put it under a desk fan for 10 minutes and take another picture. You can always tell by the complexion, rather than the structure. That's the final key

I don't think drying will make identification easier.

Possibly a Deconica species, I believe. Although liberty caps sometimes have expanded caps like that, I think
what separates this is the texture of the stem. But one can easily be fooled since there are variations in all species.

Hello Anglerfish, there's an area of lawn that I pick from every year (actually it's more of a mowed meadow, as it only gets mowed occasionally, but it is not grazed) and it always produces mushrooms like these, that are usually very broad and always lack the distinctive nipple, but they bruise blue at the base and are definitely active. I know I sent a sample a few years ago to Alan Rockefeller for analysis and as far as I can remember he said they were just regular libs. I wonder is it the lack of nutrients that makes them grow that way, or is it in the local genetics? The ones in the cow field next to it don't look like that.

Edit: actually, looking through my PMs, I did send samples, but I don't think he replied to me, unless it was by post or email. But he identified them as libs on my thread.

Protostropharia  semiglobata has a pellicle too: http://www.en.psilosophy.info/species/psilocybe_semiglobata.html#dnmn

I found some that looked like yours, with a pellicle, however they were growing from dung which P. semilanceata isn’t supposed to.
I collected them and they dried exactly like all other libs, showing hygrophanous cap which isn’t a feature of P. semiglobata so I eliminated that as a possible ID. I don’t want to post photos here to avoid confusion.
As luck would have it, mine are now dried and mixed in with the rest of my libs. I’m now second guessing myself and hoping they’re Psilocybes or at least non-toxic!!

Are there any Psilocybe species in the U.K. that look exactly like flattened semilanceata AND grow on dung? Maybe P. strictipes?
On reflection they might be a Deconica sp.(?)

These appear to me to be libs.

Stropharia semiglobata.

I think he has one Stropharia semiglobata there, the one with the long white stem. That other one with the expanded cap, I think it could still be a lib, I've seen ones like that before, but I'm seeing no bluing on the stem base, so I'm more inclined to say it's Deconica.

Please dont tear me a new asshole for posting in the wrong place. Ive been reading alot on this site and growing mono tubs for a couple years but this is my first post and i dont know how to create a thread and all that fancy stuff. I just have one question and i know someone will know cause you guys are smart af on here. Im pretty sure theres cubes growing in my yard but i cant inspect them cause my neighbors are nosy. Im in alberta and theres rabits everywhere shitting all over the place. Is there a chance of cube spores being carried out on my clothes and germinating and colonizing my front yard?

No chance. They don't grow in Canada, and they only grow on dung, like from a horse or a cow, not rabbit droppings.

Just above the top thread on the message board you should see a link that says 'Post' with a little pen and paper icon. Click that to start a new thread.

You should really start a new ID thread as hijacking someone else's can cause confusion. But no they're not magic. You have one Panaeolus papilionaceus and three Conocybe I believe.

Correct on both the mushrooms id and the new thread suggestion.
