psychedelics and the Bible
    #2545800 - 04/10/04 03:54 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

anyone ever thought that maybe some of the visions that the prophets wrote about in the bible were induced by drugs or a lot of things in the bible. i been learning a lot about ancient history and drugs has played a major part in our history its just been kept a lot from the books i was wondering if anyone has ever come up with such a theory like the one im proposing, im making it my college research paper i think has to be approved by my teacher, thought i would post on it see if any of you guys had direction or input for me. thanks :-)

yes im sure there's stuff out there about this. not sure if your interested in all world religions or one spefically, but check out some of the books by author huston smith. he is an author and prominent professor of religion. his book cleansing the doors of perception argues the case that entheogens (psychedelic drugs) can cause genuine spiritual experiences. i believe he discusses how the psilocibe mushroom may have been what is referred to as "soma" in the Rig Veda.

In Smith's book "Cleansing The Doors of Perception" he speaks of a journey on psilocybin wherein he is CERTAIN that he had a telepathic experience with another tripper. After coming down, he asked the fellow tripper about the mind-meld who had felt no such thing and Smith realized that his impression was wrong and merely an artifact of the mushroom state.

I think Peganum harmala (Syrian Rue) seeds were refereed as "Soma".

Peganum harmala (Syrian Rue) has been used throughout the southern old world during "bible times" and even before that era. All the way into pre-history.

Peganum harmala (Syrian Rue) is the only main entheogen in the southern world. Very ancient indeed.

Ya telepathy is such a rare thing. But telekinesis is much much more common.

Yes he was certain for the very reason I give in over a thousand posts, because EXTERNAL VERIFICATION failed.

Huston believed he knew the thoughts of another tripper in detail while under the influence. The other tripper felt no empathetic connection and the details were completely wrong.

"But Swami, they were connnecting on another plane..."

Read the trip reports. How often in a dark trip is it reported that one believes a good friend is out to kill them? This is caused from "scrambled neurons" not from deep insight.

heres a site that suggests that the manna god sent from heaven for the jews to eat while wandering around in the desert were actually psilocybe mushrooms

I remember seeing pictures of stained glass windows with mushrooms in them from different churches across the world - does anyone have any information (and preferably samples of pictures) regarding this? (I was talking about it with someone and I want to show them the pictures, but I have NO idea where to look)

anyone who's remotely interested should check it out.

Does anyone else find the author's to be a little on the satanish side re: their appearances?

This is Daniel Merkur's thesis, but the desert is not a likely place for mushrooms to grow, the Hebrews would not have eaten mushrooms for dietary reasons, let alone those which grow from animal dung, and lastly, why do people attempt to force their own limited experiences onto mysterious writings as explanatory? There are spontaneous visionary states NOT caused through the agency of a substance. Psychedelic experiences 'approximate' the 'Real Thing' but are not necessarily identical.

Wow, one case of mushroom-induced fantasy... I wonder if this one case can successfully disprove all telepathic ability of psychedelics?

hello
what dietary restrictions are on mushrooms
you sounded so authoritative.
there never were any kashrut against mushrooms.
BTW ever noticed jewish dancing?
usually accompanied with lots of liquor
they like the sparkly bits.

in fact the purpose of life among hassidic jews is
the raising of the sparks.

(i.e. back to god)

"There are spontaneous visionary states NOT caused through the agency of a substance"

absolutely. in fact simply being out in a desert in the hot sun and the unchanging terrain is more than enough to cause intense mirages and hallucinations, not to mention thirst or hunger or just divine inspirations.

is there any chance hallucinogenic cacti grew in the desert where the jews sojourned?
