I live in a fairly middle of the road state and the Democratic Socialists have made a really strong presence on the local political landscape and they seem to be gaining traction. This is an urban area with a large and growing tech sector and is a big importer or highly educated/skilled labor. So obviously this market is going to swing more that direction. There is definitely the idea with the DSA in regards to health care that if health care is provided no matter your employment you are much more free to take risks in the business sector. I.e. you aren't risking your literal health and financial future because your health care isn't dependent on the success of the startup. It's a shame the capitalists can't see this, as they stand to make even more money by allowing greater numbers of people to participate and invest.

As far as the debate on socialists, communists, etc. There isn't a single purely socialist nation state in existence, nor is there a purely communists, or capitalist nation state at this point. They all share systems from many different conceptual models. What the DSA is trying to do is the slide the scale a bit, and if you look around the world that model is certainly more successful than the USA's current model across many different aspects.

Socialism is only a couple hundred years old. Kings ruled before the socialist/capitalist era, both are new systems.
I am for a system of government that recognizes the Freedom of its citizens. There are many groups of people that practice different economic philosophies in this country (some even print and honor their own currency.) The U.S.A. allows this.

The ability to pursue one's happiness is the American Dream. By developing a new product, starting a business or investing in a friend, one can pursue wealth. Or one can save and buy some land, build a house and farm the soil, he will be able to keep as much food as he grows and sell some for profit if he wants to, but his dream doesn't need to be wealth. The economy in this country is not in bad shape due to capitalism, it has been under socialist influence ever since Income Tax and Social Security were taken from people, Medical freedom was taken away from people, and children were forced from houses and into government indoctrination centers (which are dominated by leftist/socialist dogma and lessons.)
You seem to be concerned that billionaires exist. Money isn't everything in life, being envious is not a reason to forbid the possibility for other people to make a good living.
I do not think either capitalism or communism are unsound financial systems, as I said earlier the problem is our debt based economy where money is only generated by people taking out loans at interest. It creates spiraling inflation and ensures some people fail the money game.
I believe that some people will benefit in any system practiced.
What I don't understand is how anyone can rationalize the theft of freedom from people who don't want to be communists. Instead I am seeing socialists cheer the enforced slavery of their countrymen in what is supposed to be a country that loves freedom. It isn't for everyone's good, but pro-socialists continue to act like they have other people's interests in mind. I would rather die than live as a slave, it isn't just the wealthy that are hurt in socialism.

Communists don't have any rights that the government doesn't let them have. Therefore they have no rights at all. If a committee can take it away on a whim then it isn't worth relying on.
Communists believe in the entity called "society," of which they see themselves as a part. Therefore if the decision makers "educate" the masses that it is in everyone's interest that people have a 9pm curfew and must have a buddy if walking outside, then any individual protest is meaningless because the individual is nothing relative to society.
Freedom must be based on individual rights, otherwise the majority opinion(which is easily controlled by media) will always vote to oppress the minority. As a classic example, the majority will always vote themselves welfare checks to be paid by those who are better off. It is not justice, unless you consider mob justice a respectable foundation for society.

I don't give a damn how much money a person has. If you take away the freedom of any one person or group of people, you take it from everyone. I will fight for the right of communists to live under the American flag as much as I would any people. The freedom communists lack is the freedom to be anything other than communists.

I have said the some people will benefit in any system. It is best not to live one's life being pissed all of the time either. What I am saying is that when a person is completely dependent on another (for education, housing, food, job, healthcare) they are in fact a slave to that person. Understanding the negative consequences of slavery and how it affects, the spirit, mentality, pride, and future of that slave may give you some idea of why some people are pissed.

I think you make a good point about there being no pure state ideologically speaking. The US has been participating in the globalization economy for a while now. It has been the objective of globalists to reduce wealth in the U.S. and raise the wealth of Third World Nations. Comparing different national economies is not a simple matter of relative purity in different economic philosophies.

Only a small fraction of Americans are/can be business owners.  What about everyone else?  Are business owners the only people who matter to you as those are the only ones who would be better off under capitalism?

Actually, it is in bad shape due to capitalism, it got in better shape as a result of New Deal policies, and returned to bad shape after Reaganomics destroyed the socialist reforms.

And as a founding father once said: "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."  Without taxes there is no military, an without a military, we would cease to exist as a country.  How do you propose we defend ourselves without taxes?

I don't care if anyone is a billionaire; I care when billionaires lower everyone else's standard of living to make themselves richer, by fighting minimum wage, unions, etc.

You keep saying this without answering the question:  WHAT FREEDOM DO COMMUNISTS NOT HAVE?  So far you've only given me the freedom for a small fraction of business owners to have a chance to succeed (or more likely fail, if we are to believe statistics).

Again, the only "freedom" you've provided us is that a small fraction of people who are business owners have a chance to succeed if their business gets really lucky (which is statistically unlikely).

Parsing my words from the sentences and reading them without full context is why you don't understand them. I explained it as clearly as I could, try reading them again, it shouldn't take too much work.
One point I will clarify is the social security tax that is taking out of someones check, involuntarily, goes into the general spending fund. It is not earmarked and saved for that person. The current workers are paying for those drawing on social security now. The previous generations social security money was spent years ago.

Communists Don't have the right to be anything other than communists. Enslaved to the totalitarian dictates of their ruler. Famous Socialists Mao, Hitler, Stalin. Each responsible for the deaths of millions and millions of their citizens. How many times does history need to repeat itself before people take responsibility for their own life?

Americans have rights from the Creator, untouchable by government.

Why did they need the constitution if the government has no hand in determining the rights of citizens?
You do realize that there are mechanisms for infringing your inalienable rights, right?
What makes you think that a government which practices under a capitalist economic system has less power over its inhabitants than a government that operates under a socialist one?

While you have a lot going on and I mostly agree, picking out fascist dictators who rule totalitarian regimes with perverted socialist constitutions (by function) is not socialism, it is totalitarianism. They might have called is socialism or communism but by function was not.

Socialism is alive and well the world over, it just doesn't exist in a pure form, and nobody has intent of doing so currently. As with all things, survival is a matter of finding the best compromise. We know that unconstrained capitalism lead us to the great depression, we know that communism and socialism have failed into totalitarianism. What we also know is that these tools can work in harmony and are doing so in many places.

Yes, and it's always been that way.  There wasn't (and still isn't) nearly enough money to have Social Security fully funded for the future, so it is and always has been a pay as you go system.

I see.  You only look at the worse examples in history and ignore all the good ones because those don't count, and you look at the best examples of capitalism in history and ignore all the bad ones because those don't count either.  :flowstone:

As I've said before, the Declaration of Independence has no force of law and is rather meaningless to how our Government works.  :shrug:

Other than the opportunity for a small number of business owners to get lucky and get very wealthy (while the majority of business owners fail), what freedoms do capitalists have that communists don't have?

Again, please be specific - no more generic "DURRRRR FREEDOM!" answers.

Well, let's think about it.

Most people spend about 30% of their income on mortgage, while communists live rent free.

But if you own your home, you can sell it when you retire, likely with a nice profit.  Lets' take an example of someone selling their home today that bought it 30 years ago.



If they paid $100,000 30 years ago, they could likely sell it today for about $250,000, a profit of $150,000!

But a 30 year fixed loan at the 1987 rate of 9% interest would have cost more than $150,000 in interest payments, so that would have been a losing proposition.  And not everyone is a home owner; approximately 43% of Americans rent their home, so they're losing big time vs communism.

Having lived in the granddaddy of Communist countries for a time, and having been given a tax-free, rent-free apartment by the state upon reaching the age of majority, I can tell you that Communist countries most definitely have private property. It's not like I had to share my apartment. I just didn't have to pay for anything but the utilities I used, and some taxes (on my income, not the apartment).

Awesomely enough, the apartment was considered to be owned by me when the whole thing collapsed. Course, now I had to pay property taxes, so I started renting it out (since I'd been living in the US), which cost me in upkeep, but eventually I sold it for a solid gain.

The state controlling the means of production does not mean the state controlling all property.

Personal property and private property is an important distinction.


That said, the Soviet Union was never actually communist. They were barely even socialist.

The Constitution was formed to ensure the protection of those rights from others that would try and destroy them, like socialists and kings.
The mechanisms that infringe on those rights are unavoidable.
We can sign contracts that let others do things we may not like because at the time of signing we thought we were getting a good deal. Part of pursuing one's happiness is that we are likely to make mistakes. There are many con artists out there, even ones who work by legal means.
Besides contracts, by recognizing freedom, we have to let anti-freedom activists spread their propaganda.
So it isn't really an infringement, more of a freedom to give away our freedom.
A government that operates under capitalism has just as much power over its inhabitants as a socialist one. It is called imposed difference in relative strength of arms. A government that recognizes the unalienable rights of it's citizens is the only way to ensure freedom from those that would take it by force.

This is a bit complicated and as I said previously studying the law is needed the specifics. But in a general way I will attempt to explain.
The Federal Government is instituted by the States and is set up to negotiate with them. It is not set up to treat with citizens of the States. By taking advantage of our freedom to enter into contract, we have been duped to identify with a Social(socialist) Security Number, which we then use to form contracts with the Federal Government. These contracts are extra-Constituional. In other words, the relationships most people have with the government is not based on Unalienable Rights but on a contracted socialist one. When you sign a contract declaring that you are a citizen of the United States (A corporation, as opposed to a citizen of one of the States of the United States of America as is on the Constitution), you are freely agreeing to their rule over you. In effect, there are two systems of government at work, the United States and The United States of America.

The difference is freedom, I don't understand how that is not specific.
One person is sovereign, the other is a slave. One is under Federal jurisdiction, the other only is when conducting interstate commerce. Understanding common law and jurisdiction will show that it is not anarchy and it may help you understand governmental role. Do not confuse the Socialist system that people are enslaved to (by deception) as the True Government of this land.

The Constitution was formed to ensure the protection of those rights from others that would try and destroy them, like socialists and kings.
The mechanisms that infringe on those rights are unavoidable.
We can sign contracts that let others do things we may not like because at the time of signing we thought we were getting a good deal. Part of pursuing one's happiness is that we are likely to make mistakes. There are many con artists out there, even ones who work by legal means.
Besides contracts, by recognizing freedom, we have to let anti-freedom activists spread their propaganda.
So it isn't really an infringement, more of a freedom to give away our freedom.
A government that operates under capitalism has just as much power over its inhabitants as a socialist one. It is called imposed difference in relative strength of arms. A government that recognizes the unalienable rights of it's citizens is the only way to ensure freedom from those that would take it by force.



I don't think you understand what i meant.
First off, the bill of rights are amendments to the constitution, hence, not the purpose of the document.  The constitution primarily establishes the specific powers and limitations of the federal government.
The government can enslave you, as an example, if you are convicted of a crime.  That doesn't sound inalienable to me.  That sounds like the government taking away freedom by force.  :shrug:

I'm sorry, but the act of getting a social security as a child does NOT enter you into a binding contract with the Government, nor is it in any way socialist.  You don't have the slightest idea what socialism is, nor do you know a thing about the law (any lawyers here should feel free to back me up or tell me I'm wrong).

So you're telling us we should want capitalism, because capitalism gives us all the freedom to live under a bridge if we can't afford a home, to die early if we can't afford good healthcare, to be ignorant if we can't afford college, to go bankrupt if our business doesn't succeed?

You're the worst salesman for capitalism I've ever known.  The ONLY specific thing you could come up with is the freedom to gamble your life away for the small chance of becoming wealthy if your business gets lucky?

Seriously dude, I thought you'd do a lot better than that.  I've always told people I prefer capitalism to communism, as I am in the 2%, but you've just sold me on communism.

Fal, I have always struggled with this. There seems to be risk (income, housing, etc)either way. So you agree.... that those who favor capitalism or socialism have risk? But you are saying it's less risk with governmental controls rather than free market ones?
