Re: Lophophora Williamsii var. Caespitosa pup grafted to Pereskiopsis [Re: LSoares]
    #22666646 -

@DaveC

I am with LSoars on this one... Some varieties are self fertile. Others are not. I have experienced this myself. I have had Lophs that were not cross pollenated throw up a seed pod that had viable seed. Now, I will also say, the same plant has also thrown pods that have had seed that was not viable. (or else not viable yet, as I have a batch of seed from a germination cup that has sat for about a month now, with no sign of germination). Its weird..LOL

What I can say is.. Wait for the pod to shrivel up. Wait for it to get (over ripe). Wait for the seeds to completely develop. Maybe you will get lucky.

Well I appear to have 2 seeds from the fruit. Maybe I should setup a seeding chamber next year as I have a few other seeds from other peyote.

Unfortunately I also have real children that seems to take up far too much time from hobbies such as these that I would like to continue with now.... Would anyone like to adopt some small children to help out?

Here's an update on the grafts I made, Earlier this year the second graft popped up 2 flowers, hurray! Not the best photos I'm afraid.

And the original graft where the pereskiopsis wasn't looking too healthy has sprouts some roots after I trimmed a few of the lower pups off. It's now sitting in a pot and will hopefully return from it's currently rather shrivelled state.

To best protect your Loph (I have a Caespitosa), how does one best choose which pup to cut for grafting? Or doesn't it really matter?

I am not really that experienced yet with keeping my Caesp or any other Loph for that matter (it's doing great though - I grow under blue-white LED, probably not best for when at flowering age though - does red light also signal flowering or is it only necessary for it?)..
So I don't know how the cactus divides its resources and where it is most resilient, on the far outer/under edge or rather amidst..

I personally just cut one that was easy to remove from the mother plant and did nothing futher to protect it... It's turned out fine but that's could all have come down to luck.
I see a lot of people suggesting dusting cuts with sulphur or cinnamon.
Anyway I come bearing fruit again

Been a while since I last posted, as this graft is getting towards 3 years old, I'm wondering what to do with it.

Do I leave it as is for longer, do I try and root it. Do I try rooting it and leaving something to keep growing?

Another possibility would be to regraft to Trichocereus or something. Looks like it's doing great as is though, maybe it's best to just keep doing what you're doing.

Here's the original graft I did.

Now after about 3.5 years the pups, on my second graft, are now maturing and starting to produce their own flowers. I should probably set something up to start growing seeds

Maybe i should try graft a Caespitosa pup to a pereskiopsis.
I only have grafted seedling to pereskiopsis.
I have this Caespitosa, im sure it would be nice and donate a pup for the experiment.

I have never really had luck grafting pups to Pereskiopsis. Seeds are simple. But impale grafts always seemed like a pain. I can graft pups to selenicereus with no problem though

I only grafted seedlings before.
Maybe try one impale, one V-slot and one stair type graft.

Saw this video where the guy used a electric drill to make the hole in the scion and then inserted the pereskiopsis.
Wonder if such rough ways can actually work.

I just wish I had more time, space and money to do more, funny how those things all disappear when you have a family.

Sacrafices brother. I just got out of a four year relationship and i can relate to where you are coming from. I felt like a lot of my passions had become frozen and there was barely enough time to catch my breath it seemed. But at the end of the day with my girl in my arms and the ease of knowing that all my shit was handled for another day was enough for my acceptance of those shortcomings. though im not going to lie, i wasnt always easy to gain such acceptance.

Though i look back and see that, yeah some of my known passions were locked up and out of commission, but the passion flowed through other channels and i believe im a better man because of it.

Stay in the fight.
Much love bro

Allthough family life and working take most of ones time, i think everybody needs a little time for themselves to do whatever hobbies one have.
One doesn´t have to sacrifice all the family and love stuff.
But it can be hard, i know.
Sometimes there just isn´t enough time.
Thankfully i have a lady that let me do a lot of my stuff, i consider myself very lucky.

Well this graft is now around the 4 year mark and roughly 3 inches in diameter including the pups.

Thanks for the insights. Beautiful plant and flowers  I think it's funny how lophs cluster, much more so on grafts like this.
I have grafts including caesp and one of them is on peres, but still very early.

Do you plan on degrafting at some point or not before you are forced to? And if so, do you switch to a big rootstock or let it root?

I want to push it to the limit on the pereskiopsis if I can. Part of me wants to let it root, but would I then lose all the flowers it produces? The mother plant, I took the pup from, hasn't flowered once since I've had it. So I'd probably go for a larger root stock.

Or do I graft a couple of the bigger pups to a big rootstock? There's so many options I could choose  :wowz:

Pushing the limits does make sense  (Unless you have particular impatient reasons to wanna go to own roots asap)

I don't know about the flowering and I am not ready for that anyway - setting up a lot of grows so that in the coming years i should have a lot of fun with that.

If the grafts have reached enough maturity (despite age) to flower, doesn't that keep if it goes to own root? Or is ability to flower also determined by vigor which is optimized on grafts?

Either way it seems like the more indoors / artificially controlled you grow, the more flowering should also be something you could induce - as far as the potential is there of course.

There is definitely a lot of options with these kinds of things and I like to spread my odds cause in a way that allows you to do a lot more experiments simultaneously and figure out what works and what you wanna do after.
