I have found some morels for my first time. I live about 25 miles south of portland oregon, and id'd them, and found out they were black morels. They were growing in the subburbs actually, and were growing on what looked to be cedar woodchips, but not 100% sure. Good luck, and by the way, these are my new favorite edible, too!!
Morel growth is still crappy down in the southeast as well. Went hunting for god knows how many hours this weekend, probably walked about 3 miles worth of good morel habitat... the only place I ended up getting lucky was in a patch in my backyard. One single aged morel with a broken stem. We need some damn rain down hurrr!
