My wife is Brazilian so in order to communicate with her family I'd like to be fluent in Brazilian Portuguese.

After that, maybe Spanish, just because it can be useful.

Probably Chinese because it would be good for a job to be able to communicate with our manufacturing overlords.

Are you sure you want to really understand how much of a disappoint you really are?:wonka:

Hell yeah I would, otherwise how could I fix it? She speaks perfect English though so she'd tell me to my face, lol.

I had to take a course that involved some (MIPS) assembly programming. Seems like it would be really tedious to write anything serious with it, but it's fun seeing those low-level details. Have you guys heard of the game "Box-256"?

Spanish (practical)

Russian (cause it sounds cool)

Hawaiian? :strokebeard: Maybe Chinese or Japanese. I dunno. (cause they are exotic)

Good stuff, it's confusing but it's incredibly powerful so consider your time well spent. There's a game called Corewars where you program warriors in an assembly-like syntax and have them duke it out on virtual "hills". It's pretty fun and the only limit is your understanding of the language... come to think of it, i'm gonna write a warrior tonight.

I gained a shallow understanding of the language as a result of some hackthissite challenges involving reverse engineering to crack simple DRM, but then was too afraid to touch it. I just might someday soon even though I think C should come first for me.

If you know Java or another "curly-brace" language, a lot of the syntax is the same in C. You mostly just have a lot more power to fuck yourself over. If you allow array bounds to be exceeded, your program will happily chug along anyway and perhaps allow malicious input to cause it to execute arbitrary code. If you dynamically allocate memory, it's up to you to free it, and this can become impossible if you no longer have a pointer to it. Structs are pretty much the same concept as objects in other languages, except that there are no methods packaged along with the data.

Right, I wish they took more time to cover C in college. Not that I paid terribly much attention in school, but it would've been nice to have a good low-level foundation. I'm currently comfortable in Ruby, Java, and some web languages as well as C++. There are no jobs around here that utilize Java so I had to teach myself Ruby, which I hated at first but am coming to appreciate for how easy it makes life. Going from using Ruby daily to something like C is going to be interesting, but like you said it's just a lower level C++ with more control.

Currently I'm a TA for a 2nd year course where they introduce unix/linux programming in C. Unfortunately I'm maybe not the best qualified for it, but I need the money. The C language itself I'm pretty confident with, but there is some material on sockets/network communications at the end of the course that I'm pretty lost on. Didn't do well on that part when I took the course and I apparently haven't done enough now to catch up, so this week's tutorial was pretty brutal.

Sorry to hear that, sockets are a bitch. I remember many a late night working on a unix socket program to handle semaphores properly and utilize different connection types... my buddies and I made it fun but it was a nightmare of work.

Good luck man, I can't imagine it's terribly difficult to brush up on those subjects if you put in the time

Yeah I think putting in the time was the main issue, some other shit came up and I was scrambling to prepare for the tutorial at the last minute. Should be able to sort it out for next week's class I think.

Got a deadline coming soon for an AI class I'm taking too, this neural net thing I've been putting off. Hopefully I can get a lot of that figured out tomorrow.
