Re: Which languages do you speak? [Re: DieCommie]

We had this thing in school called the 'Shirley Method' where we broke down sentences, understood every part, and had sort of songs to help remind you.
They need to adopt that so you can learn another languages sentence structure, the you just learn the most used words and eccentricities (tonal language may be confusing), instead of just memorizing every word. There can't be more then 100 really important words in a language to get by

I only know the best language, but want to learn one eventually.
Probably won't though.

Unfortunately I only speak my native language, English. But I would like to learn Spanish, as it opens up so many more job opportunities here.

I would LOVE to learn at least rudimentary Italian, because my family comes from Italy and I hope to visit that country someday.

The main problem with most languages for english speakers is the declinations. The present tense in english has what, 2 forms? I go, we go, they go, he goes. In the past we have I went, I have gone, future; I will go. In other languages there are 5 or 6 forms for each tense and more tenses. There are about a dozen tenses for spanish but you only really use about 3 very much - present, simple past, simple future.

Other languages have "moods" not that they get cranky on you, lol, but the subjunctive shows doubt or uncertainty. We show that by adding words like It may be that it is... or I doubt that could be... if it were so... but we use the same verb forms, other languages use a special form with the usual 6 variations. Then there is the past subjunctive. Plus the conditional, another tense with 6 forms. But if you think spanish is hard wait until you see german, finish, and some others. Italian is tough too, they have lots of little rules for conjunctions, to the, from the, by the, at the, etc and so on take a special word.

You can get by in most any language using just the present tense like yesterday I go to the movies. Not correct but everyone understands. Pronunciation is very important.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)
