Techniques borrowed from bonsai
    #24775842 -

Hey dudes

I don't grow traditional bonsai trees apart from some ficus someone gave me, but am forced to keep plants in my growhouse pretty small.
Also have come to realize that there is more to this than just topping off a plant at the last moment before it gets too high, for example forcing the stem to bend looks cool and gives some extra slack. Yes I am still into the aesthetics, just not how you'd picture traditional bonsai in terms of what species are used, miniature appearance etc.

To the point: I read what is basically a rumor that leaves can be discouraged from growing larger if you cut off the tip. Is that true? What can you tell me about other more orthodox ways to make smaller-than-normal leaves? IIRC if you nip buds in the right season leaves come out smaller afterwards?

Beyond that I would be very interested in any other bonsaiing (or general pruning / shaping) techniques without necessarily conforming to all rules, practices or tendencies of bonsai!

Even some more in-depth theory on pruning would be helpful. I get that it promotes branching and bushiness but not how to apply it strategically.

I would like to bonsai

- Baobab
- Weed
- Avocado
- Boswellia (if I even get that far germinating)
- Moringa (again: if I can accomodate the plant to begin with)

The avocado is a real problem: I hadn't antipicated the leaves to be so ginormous. I tied down the stem in a bend and the plan now is to fatten up that stem and not authorize basically any new growth except new leaves from a constant apex. I am kind of guessing even this will be unmanageable in the long run and pretty much beyond pollarding.
On the other hand, it could be a win-win because a fat trunk can be really lovely.

I dont know squat about bonsai. But i have heard that yoi can make leaves small by trimming your trees back. I have no experience really. I had some but my wife is a real bitch and killed the 2 i had. If she wanta to hurt me she knows exactly how to do it and its with my plants. And she has killed more than i can remember.

Thanks

A little difficult for me cause I have no space to let it grow and them trim it back hugely all of a sudden...

I can't help you with the wife man, but try to resist the urge to water her I guess. Someone once said: A man can ruin you and destroy your shit but a woman gets inside of your head and shits on your heart. I guess your heart is where your plants are.

Just read about someone whose plant only sprouted leaves and didn't grow higher for many months after topping it, that's encouraging! If I can just keep it from growing a massive canopy I will be in the clear...

Light keeps leaves smaller. Drought stress can too.
I've read air pruning pots keeps the plants smaller, not sure what it does on leaf size.
Another option is grafting to slow stock.

Isn't pruning a bit like just shaping the plant with some delay?
Like you have to imagine where you want a branch to be and then you cut it above that point so a bud forms.
Possibly lower branches will be harder to get started so you may have to start pruning early (or rigoreus) for those, or you can just graft a branch onto somewhere.
From what i've read homo grafts have a good chance to outperform hetero grafts considerably

Homo grafts like grafting onto the same species? (why?)

Yeah I like your way of saying shape the plant with a delay! I also read a bit about two ways of pruning, to basically thicken the growth in your plant by topping so that you get dense growth from buds where there are already leaves or branches etc, or thinning by removing branches.
Your suggestion involves an ideal scenario where you also have little trouble directing growth towards a specific bud rather than all along that lower branch. You can of course always thin out those buds too.

I just have little experience with significant trimming at all, let alone to keep a plant at bay ferociously and having to trim just about everything!
No idea yet how many buds can develop where there are basically no nodes or what to expect from a plant when you take away options continuously.

Air pruning I didn't know about yet, thank you

The pruning mentioned earlier apparently must be done in the spring (exfoliation) but only on species that can handle that, which I have no idea with avocado but I think I can find out myself.

Thats what louis c.k. said. Poor dude fucked up. As everyone else in hollywood.

All i know is that you have to trim and train the branches and use a small pot. On the repot you trim the roots. Clean them up real good and transplant and, fertilize.

I actually have a small, pocket guide to,bonsai. Somewhere around. Pretty good read and ita for the long haul.
