Esentially, yeah.  You can even bonsai ganja.  But convincing whatever plant you're using to stay minature is where the art form lies.

That would be cool! Keep it way short and infinitely older than you.

Finding one like that would blow my mind. It sucks we cant stick around that long to actually see a seedling grow that old.

An oak bonsai would certainly be neat to make.

you can bonsai anything yes, but the true art in bonsai and penjing is to make it look like it really is a miniature tree.
you want a plant that adapts to the pot that it is growing in, elms do this very well and there leaf size can go right down to half a cm. (over time)
they are very forgiving too. haha
this is a good example of this.

If I had meristematic tissue, I would totally get into bonsai, because I could live forever.  But sadly, I don't have much patience, so it's one of those things I like to appreciate, but don't have a whole lot of personal interest in.  Perhaps when I retire, it's a hobby I can pick up.

I have made bonsai out of Trident Maple (Acer), Trichodiadema bulbosum.  (South African bonsai), Mimosa Hostilis is pretty easy to Bonsai and also has the added entheogenic qualities of having DMT in it's roots if you ever wanted to harvest it... But then again why would you want to kill a tree that you worked so hard on... ?

Yes Mimosa Hostilis does make a good bonsai, I got a little one in training.
its like growing a peyote for years and then eating it.

i really want to try this with a Japanese red maple this summer. Just curious, could palm trees be made into a bonsai? I have two little ones that look just like little palm trees but i never did anything but keep them in a small pot.... go figure

When I asked seasoned bonsai growers that the answer I got was since palm 'trees' grow only out of the top and cant branch they cant be trained like real trees can and so unless a dwarf form is found you can just stunt their growth until they either die from the strain or are planted where they can start growing bigger again. But if youve got nothing else you can do with them, might as well stunt them and call them a bonsai for 5 or 10 years :smirk:

As for Mimosa hostilis, bonsai are often root-pruned to keep them healthy, and commercial M. hostilis has just a fraction of its roots harvested in a cycle to keep the trees alive and growing roots. Root mass could be got from a large bonsai in much the same way its got from large trees in commercial harvesting. The yield would just be proportionately smaller.

I'm growing over half a dozen species of Brunfelsia, and have always wanted to try and turn to train some into bonsai, but just haven't done the proper research to even begin tr attempt. So many projects, so little time. Plus, being a Gemini, I tend to work on 4 dozen different things at once

Japanese maples always look nice as bonsai.

what type of palm tree are we talking about?
cycads look very nice as older bonsai anything over 15 years.
and the ponga tree fern gives the same shape  but can be done in a much quicker time frame.

I've heard junipers are good for beginners.

I think bougainvillea and Jade are good as well.

Oftentimes, they choose varieties with smaller leaves, because it's meant to be a miniature.

Some specimens are chosen for their knobby or bulbous trunks.

One trick is to prune the roots, as well as the top. (Sometimes, an entire landscpe has to fit on top of plate.)

Different methods are used to artificially age and bend the branches and trunk, such as twisting wires, using a blowtorch, or tying on weights.

Heavy coins or bright strings might be used, especially for religious significance.
