Bonsai Tree
    #5589966 - 05/04/06 12:58 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

This is my Bonsai tree, I bought it last week for $30 at the queen's market. That's an annual thing here in Holland where we celebrate the birthday of the queen. What is boils down to is that eveyone is allowed to make a stand in the city and sell their old stuff and that night everyone gets really piss drunk and has fun. I'm against the queen but hey that's not gonna stop a party
Anyway I was drunk/stoned and I bought it. They claimed it was older than 10 years and I forgot what the guy said about caring for it. Basically, as watering is pretty hard because the soil is like a hill, I just fill up the saucer underneath the bonsai to water it.
So how does it look to you guys, was it a good price? Is it even a Bonsai?
Does it require any special care?

its a very nice tree. needs a bit more training though. the pads need more definition. i bet there is a nice nebari under all that dirt. not a bad price. with a little love you could have an impressive informal upright in a couple years.

thats a nice looking bonsai for $30 it is a common ficus which are fairly easy to take care of because they are good for indoors. its got a pretty nice looking base and trunk. Water the soil completely once the soil gets fairly dry to the touch, you never want it to get completely dry though. You might want to water it with a 1/2 strength 20/20/20 fertilizer once a month until the end of summer. Pick up a good bonsai care book that will give you a lot more info. Bonsai is a wonderful hobby very relaxing and incredibly rewarding

I do agree with waixingren's assessment the pads need a little work and filling out. Thats where a good bonsai book comes in learn how to train the branches with copper wire and learn how to pinch new shoots to fill in the pads.

I am lucky enough to live not too far from a wonderful Bonsai garden run by a master bonsai artist. Some of his trees are just jaw dropping. He regularly holds classes, you pick out your tree stock which he has a wonderful selection of and you learn how to train the tree under his supervision. I started a very nice Trident Maple last year it's starting to come along very nicely and in a few years it might be a show worthy specimen

Stateside, we have a good selection of bonsai books at the library. I would think that it would be the same there.

Cool, thanks guys. I'll read up a little bit online first. Then I might consider buying a book.
