My Bonsai/Cacti garden.
    #3588738 - 01/06/05 01:50 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Just thought id post some pics of my Bonsai tree and cactus seedlings.

I also have a question about my Ficus Benjamina bonsai for anyone who has grown bonsai. Its been slowly dropping its leaves over the past week, im thinking its because i moved from a differant house and the humidity is quite low in its current home, but im relatively new to bonsai so let me know if there are any other posabilities. Id also like to know, in which season do Ficus Benjaminas fruit and how often?

very nice. what type of tree is that? how old is it too? the trunk on that thing looks like it's a good bit of age on it. looks like you're off to a good start with your cacti seedlings as well. great flix.

Its a Ficus Benjamina. Id estimate it at about 5 years old. But i cant be sure as it was a gift.

that's actually a fairly nice bonsai, most store bought ones have simply been air grafted and then chopped and planted into a small pot, result: stick with roots. ha.

anyway, yours has some nice roots, cool.

so ficus are extremely bitchy, if you move them like you did, expect leaf drop, every time.

you can expect to loose from one leaf to all of them, but don't worry, they will all come back.!

your 64 degree temp will cause more drop than low humidity, but a ficus could adapt to that environment.

make sure to let the plant transition from wet to slightly dry to get the best results. watering every day will kill it, unless you got some serious light and wind.

and it's probably a cutting and i would go with 5 years also, sure why not. but the plant it was cloned from could have been 20 years old so technically the little guy is probably much older, i'm a dork.

i agree with the above. jsut to add a little more. that species roots are the most sensative part. i notice that when i dont water enough (obviously) or water too much they always drop leaves. i also noticed when clipping roots for my ficus binsais that tehy would drop a fair few then as well. its expected.

they never droped from jsut switching location on me though. same general temps however. keep the roots ahppy and the whole plant will be happy.

ps if you want to try a neat fun bonsai project try out F. pumilia. creeping fig. train it as a standard. i had so much fun playing with this species....wish i still had them. perhaps i'll uproot another and try again.

oh yeah,

yellow leaves:: too much water

sudden leaf drop with no real color change:: temp change/ draft ( hot or cold ) watch out for heaters and drafty windows in winter.

aside from pests like spider mite, and diseases, this is pretty much the rule of thumb for tropical plants.

and when pruning bonsai another general rule is:: take from the top the same amount that you take from the bottom. in other words take some foliage off to compensate for the loss of roots.
