My germination experiments with juniper berries (from the spice section at the store) have not been successful.

But, closed juniper cones (shaped like a scaly ball) will open when dry and leave dozens of viable seeds in a paper bag.

My seedlings got as big as the $25 one, in 6 months.

And, alot of xeriscape suppliers will probably sell 5 trees of that size for $25.

Colleges with focuses on native plants or the timber industry will also have deals like these.

(Juniper has been used as a source of thujone, FWIW. Small amounts are reportedly safe to smoke for subtle effects, but I haven't personally tried it.

The berries are said to lower blood sugar.)

When I trained peppers to look like trees, they wouldn't get taller from having the bottom leaves removed.

Given full sun, no frost, and plenty of nutrients, I don't think they'll ever loose vigor.

So, it might be better to let the plants reach maturity, before deciding how to prune them.
