Oftentimes, they choose varieties with smaller leaves, because it's meant to be a miniature.

Some specimens are chosen for their knobby or bulbous trunks.

One trick is to prune the roots, as well as the top. (Sometimes, an entire landscpe has to fit on top of plate.)

Different methods are used to artificially age and bend the branches and trunk, such as twisting wires, using a blowtorch, or tying on weights.

Heavy coins or bright strings might be used, especially for religious significance.


Often miniature leaves and even fruit can be achieved with bonsai techniques, even if a small-leaved species isn't chosen.  People artistically strip the bark and otherwise get really detailed on theirs since bonsai make for relatively small plants.

please don't grow oak seeds for bonsai, you will be waiting so long.
they just look like sticks for many years.
oaks are nice but need to be a lot older.
go to a garden center the old wired places are the best, and ask to see all there trees out the back say its for bonsai, they normally have a lot of miss formed trees out the back they are perfect for bonsai as long as the leaves are small and they do well root bound.
junipers are very fasty growing and the best for beginners

Weeping willow is an interesting specimen, because it roots from free branches, which fall in my yard.

Adult wood is brittle.

Roots seek any water source, invading everything, from a glass of water to pressure fitted pipes.

Small saplings can grow 7ft in a year, meaning that the flexible, green wood can be trained for knobbiness in a hurry. Bend a little a time or it will die.

This one will keep you busy with lots of new shoots but has lots of energy.

Roots should be woody before positioning them over found objects. Tender roots will just fall off.

If you want to take the time to grow one, oak seedlings are attractively bent around oddly planted acorns, which eventually fall off.

I got interesting trunk shapes by repositioning the acorn, while it was still green.
