Re: American Slavery v Foreign Sweatshops [Re: Konyap]

Would you rather have them work in sweatshops or resort to prostitution?

They're going to work no matter what and sweatshops are the best option  they have.

Yeah, sweatshops are horrible, but it could be a lot worse.

That wouldn't fix shit and you know it. The rest of the world would hum along with cheap goods and the US would nose dive into absolute poverty.

The way of life in the west is only possible due to an imbalance of relative wealth and power.

Our way of life would be unsustainable without cheap labour outside of the west.

Itd be hard gettimg in on a platform of lower quality which costs more just to be fair to people we cant even see.

Slavery has much like racism become more and more covert.
Its shapeshifted but has gone nowhere.

Yeah, right. A job people freely take and are glad to get = slavery. Special breaks for certain groups = racism against them.

I do agree our way of life is unsustainable except for the wealthy. But is the fact that many countries are unwilling or unable to control their population our fault? We send over free condoms and they use them as water balloons. So we have to make their lives better? If we do, they will take the prosperity and instead of 4 kids, have 8 or if they are already having 8, go to 10 or 12, then we get to take care of them too. Let people suffer the consequences of their own actions. If they play in traffic, they get run over. If they have too many kids, they suffer.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

I didn't realise a prerequisite for poverty was 5 plus kids.

You're right they should thank us for paying them at all.
Imagine what they would do without a resource guzzling totally unsustainable west help them redistribute the worlds resources based on the common sense of capatalism.

I understand your first point, and my plan is essentially a play at continuing that imbalance in the favor of the U.S. populace.

What makes you think that cheap labor overseas is necessary for prosperity?  The U.S. median was doing much better before we off-shored all of our jobs.

You misread me if you think that my primary concern here is being more fair to third world labor.  It's all about being fair to U.S. labor.

That is the opposite of what has happened in virtually every developed nation.  What makes you think that prosperity in developing nations would lead to higher fertility rate in opposition to the general trend?

"Our way of life would be unsustainable with cheap labour outside of the west"

Total nonsense, you do realize that Western nations have only been outsourcing manufacturing jobs for the past 30 years?

"Slavery has...become more and more covert"

You do realize globalization has lifted up emerging third world economies at the expense of the developed Western economies?

Yes.
During that time the way of life has become to dependant on cheap foreign labour.
I could draw parallels to cornfields.

Yes, despite its best efforts.

It's a point that makes no sense whatsoever other than to bitch.

If welfare is giving women incentive to breed like rabbits, and that's a problem, then just cut that incentive, not the whole damn thing.

Besides, welfare gives parents more money per child so that they can feed that child. You can't feed a family of 4 with the near minimum income for a family of 2.

If they aren't using that money to feed their children then that's neglect and the state has every right to claim their children.

"life has become to dependent on cheap foreign labour"

That only thing that has become "dependent" on cheap foreign labor are profits margins for global companies that are mainly owned by the top .10 of 1%.

Joe Six-Pack has not benefited from this outcome, it has lowered his standard of living.

right, but before that came about, joe six-pack was getting paid a union wage under union conditions to manufacture the same goods as are made today in the sweatshop.  He had to pay a little more to buy the good shit, but it lasted longer and he got paid more so it worked out just fine for him.
