American Slavery v Foreign Sweatshops

American Slavery v Foreign Sweatshops

Slavery in America was used for the production of goods. Slave owners produced at a low cost (food and water).

Sweatshops, such as American GAP factories in Bangladesh, pay children and adults small wages (30 cents/hour) to work long hours and produce goods (workers buy their own food and water).

Is the modern sweatshop a more "ethical" version of slavery?

No they're both fucked up. More fucked is the idea that many on both ends consider themselves fortunate to have work and food and shelter (dreary as all might be.)

Not more ethical. Equally fucked up as in the past. Clothing prices are artificially low in this period of history.

Thank God for the regulations that stop this sort of thing in America!

It's better to enslave other countries with less regulations.

They are inferior and easy to take advantage of.

And it's legal!

Third world labor is much cheaper than buying slaves.

There are definitely sweatshops in America.  How do you think that Apple puts all of that shiny into your phone?  With highly paid software engineers working reasonable hours?

I would say that unless they are imprisoned by the employer, it is not in fact slavery and is definitely more ethical than slavery. Though still not especially ethical.

Outright slavery might be better

The US should have barred business' like GAP when our economy was stronger, I blame Republicans and their obsession with deregulation when financially convenient to the status quo

Remember how democrats were originally slave owners and supporters?

And now they hike up the regulations, which brings about these slavery sweat shops.

What a coincidence!

Why would you want to fix it?

It's been going on for years. It's a common trend now.

Taboo is trying to stop it.

But what is your idea?

simply require that goods sold in the U.S. be manufactured according to U.S. labor laws regardless of where they are produced in the world.  Be like Japan, and require on-site U.S. inspectors to observe and report on whether the law is being fulfilled.  Done deal.  Anyone is free to produce whatever they want, wherever they want, but if they don't want to conform to U.S. labor laws, they'll have to find other customers.  That plan probably only has a 20 year shelf life at this point though.

Its really pretty obvious, the economy might take a hit (like ending slavery) but those businesses would be tanked and an enormous wrong would be righted.

Yes, that does sound great. Does this include minimum wage?

Although, I doubt anything like this will ever become policy.

If you can't beat em, join em.

Either way America wins, right? We get our clothes and we don't have to witness modern day slavery. Win win!

me too, even though it is well within the power of congress to enact such a law

is that how you really feel?

Wrong.  It isn't a win-win for U.S. labor, which also happens to make up the bulk of the U.S. consumer.  It doesn't matter how cheap shit is if you don't have any money.

Not losing sleep over it, but I avoid exploitative companies and would vote for regulation to curb slavery

Well with the way our economy is set up if we told businesses they couldn't offshore their work for cheaper labor they'd take their business over to those cheaper countries and then offshore only very specific work to us.

Or hike their prices up to insane levels. They already sell their goods for more than 1000% of the production value, nothing would stop them from producing them at American wage levels and then still marking up the sale price +100% or more. We have laws against that but it's not stopping them.
