Is anyone here diabetic/ hypoglycemic?!?! A1C for me tommorow...

If anyone here is diabetic/ hypoglycemic, could you please weigh in on my situation? About a month ago i got the flu for the first time in like 6 years, hit me hard but i was pretty much back to 99% after a week. I went on a camping trip Sept 15-19, was hiking/ canoeing all day everyday with not a whole lot but water and sugary snacks to keep me going, and the second night ate dinner (white rice and tuna) and about a half hour later my whole world came crashing down. Wasnt making sense, nor was anyone to me, confused, tingly, thought I got poisoned or something. Then I felt terrible for about a week, near-constant fear of dying, felt weak, confused, and constant vertigo, pissin every 30 sec (exaggerated but not too far) until  Friday I got up late, skipped breakfast AND COFFEE (unheard of for me), and collapsed at work. Got rushed to the ER, but the hospital in my area is literally a town joke. The doctor even suggested it was most definitely my blood sugar (meanwhile the nurse said it was my heart, after doing an EKG and confirming my heart was fine), but yet when I got released I read through my paperwork and they didn't BG test me at all. Tested me for infections and heart problems, of which they said I had none. I'm close to a few diabetics, and one hooked me up with a BG tester. Got some strips and batteries. Tested at 38 mg/dL, and felt like it. Drank some sweet tea and ate dinner early (on the half hour scary ass drive home from getting the batteries/ test strips trying not to pass out. Don't worry, I took back rodes so I could do 20 mph and minimize potential harm) and felt balanced at 99 mg/dL. Within a half hour of finishing the meal I was back down to 52 mg/dL. Ate some Swiss rolls and got back up to 84, but then was back to 46 mg/ dL in another half hour. It's going on Tues now and im still fighting to keep my sugars up (ran out of test strips after lunch, dont have money for more until Thurs, so im kinda in the dark now and wingin it by feeling). Does low blood sugar fuck with your heart/ make it start racing? Cuz it feels like I'm having probs with my heart,  scaring the shit out of my only 27 year old self. Also if my heart starts acting weird, should i not fall asleep? Seems like it gets to me more at night. Thank god I'm going to a real doc tomorrow for my A1C/ more blood work, don't know how much more I can take, and don't really even know what to do besides take the Meclizine they prescribed to make the vertigo a little less terrible.  FYI this is why I haven't posted in a while. Any advice would be great, even from non-diabetics, cuz I'm still not sure what's even happening.

Also, due to the nature of this sight, I should probably state that I haven't touched anything besides pot and cigarettes (an 8th lasts me a week or two, a pack of cigs 2-3 days) in months, and even then it has only been the addition of a very occasional couple beers after work my boss can sometimes talk me into, for over a year. Eat pretty healthy, hike a few miles almost daily mushroom hunting, no medical history besides a broken ankle. Oh, one time I got an eye infection, too.

Wow, 38??!!! I didn't know people could get that low without having injected insulin. Your body should be regulating that naturally so that you never go bellow 60 or so.

I'm no doctor, but that doesn't sound like diabetes to me. Maybe another endocrine problem? The onset of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes would be marked by high blood sugar, not low. I was at like 250 when I got diagnosed type 1.

Get that figured out man hypoglycemia is no joke, especially if your pancreas is just dumping excess insulin into your system. Maybe try eating complex carbohydrates/ high fiber throughout the day, and keep sugar on you for emergencies. Definitely keep testing when you feel it's needed and show the results to your doctor. You might want to make an appointment with an endocrinologist asap. They often have long waits to get an appointment.

Thanks, Dr. P! I thought the same thing, diabetes is marked by too high of sugar but wasn't sure, I'm kind of new to all this.

Glucose problems do tend to run in my family, which makes this even scarier for me. I was told when my grandma was admitted to the hospital a few years ago she was at almost 600 (and she's in her mid 80s!).

Sorry to hear you are diagnosed type 1 and have to live with such problems regularly. I never really found it funny in the first place, but now Wilford Brimley memes piss me off. This stuff is no joke!
