***UPDATE****
A few days into the diet we took him in again today.
His blood sugar last week was 466. Axnormal cat is supposed to he 90-150. Today, after a few days on a wet food/no carb diet if's at 236!! Not perfect, but it dropped a lot!!! And that's only a few days!!
Vet says glucometers used on humans can also be used for home testing with cats, so we got one from a diabetic friend. We have to test him everyday and make sure it's still dropping
Then tonight he was either scratched by the other cat or stung by a bug because he rubbed some skin raw beneath his nose. He's a mess.

stoned shroom - we give my cat about 1/3 can of wet food and a half cup of dry food a day. its dietetic management food from Purina... Before we knew she was diabetic, she started losing alot of weight, this is how we knew something was wrong. Before we found this out, we use to leave food in her bowl 24/7. now we feed her just a little bit a few times each day. she is not as overweight as she use to be before she turned diabetic but she is starting to put some more weight back on.

Man this thread makes me wonder about my family cat.
She is around 9-10 years old. Tuxedo cat. ALWAYS been a runt, like the most petite cat I've ever seen.. She eats, we give her canned food occasionally..
I just really doubt I had a diabetic cat for 10 years, she seems happy and healthy besides always looking underweight since being a kitten. We used to have another cat that was overweight, which is why I always figured maybe it was just the cat's individual body type.
My cat is crazy. Never shuts up, constantly looking for attention. Just prances around meowing if you look at her. You can't pet her, you just put your hand out and let the cat rub against you. ahhh, cats are funny.
GJ OP on making homemade cat food and actually doing your own research after the vet's options.

Sorry to read that
I never knew dried food was bad news,I always thought it would be good for their teeth, with all the crunching they do.
I recently had to inform a neighbor not to give my cat milk as they can`t process the lactose but the dried foods an eyeopener.

I have one you cant not pet, he starts by rubbing against your leg, then he claws it, you swat at him and he rubs the hand, then claws it so you cant pull it away, then he's in your lap trying to get his head under a hand so you have to pet him or he's in your face rubbing all over it to leave you with as much extra hair as possible, so you drop him on the floor and the claws come out and back in the lap he goes... it's an all day battle

StonedShroom said: I have had Tux for 6 years. He has always been a timid cat, and never really was personable. I always tried to get him to be a "lap cat" but he never liked being in anyone's lap.... he did play fetch, which is weird for a cat. But he wouldn't fetch just anything, he would pick certain things to fetch. A jingle collar he'd never wear, but would fetch, other misc cat toys, and finally a drawstring that came out of a pair of gym shorts in the laundry a couple months ago.
When my new GF moved in 7 months ago, she instantly fell in love with Tux... and worked with him slowly but surely, to the point where he would crawl in your lap and sleep. Something I have NEVER been able to get him to do. Every morning he would wake up my GF by jumping on the bed, cuddling right next to her, and gently pawing her arm until she woke up and pet him.
Lately, we've noticed he has been dropping weight, but we chalked it up to him CONSTANTLY playing fetch with his new found string. Then he started the CONSTANT meowing. We thought that he was just wanting these new treats we have... The other night a friend came over. This friend HARDLY comes over bc she's trying to get into med school, so on top of her regular 9-5 she works as a CNA part time... she also happens to have a really good friend who is a vet, and she has spent a lot of time at her vet office helping out. As soon as she saw Tux she said his coat looked a bit scraggly, and I said he's shedding really bad because of the summer. She said no, it looks like hyperthyroid. She said she would take him in to her friend, and he'll get a free exam.
Well, his exam was today. He has severe diabetes, the kind he was born with, not that developed bc of unhealthy lifestyle. comparable to type 1 diabetes with humans. On top of diabetes he also has hyperthyroid, and the two combined are causing his kidney and liver to slowly fail... which causes almost constant urinary tract infections.
On top of the $350/month maintenance costs for diabetes meds for the rest of his life, he would also require constant supervision to make sure he doesn't start seizures or fall into a coma and insulin injections every 12 hours. Also, we would have to somehow figure how to split our two cats in our tiny condo and make sure Tux has his own food and has eaten a certain amount before giving him insulin.
We just don't have the resources for the constant care and cost of meds. The vet said even with the meds, there is no real guarantee it will greatly improve the quality of life- it will just prolong the inevitable. The vet recommended we take him out of his pain.
He has one last weekend with us.
Tux

my cat is diabetic, i have to give him insulin twice a day. he still seems to be getting by just fine...... are you sure its #350 a month? i think my cats meds are really cheap, its just a bottle of insulin and some sryinges. and he maybee goes through a bottle every 2 months.

this is the EXACT same way my cat acts... non-stop meowing, her name fits her well, meow meow... gay, i know but i didn't name her. lol
also another way we knew there was something wrong with her was she would always piss and when she did it didn't clump up the same in the kitty litter.
