My chubby diabetic cat story
    #20510191 -

So I think I made a post about this a little while ago, but we recently adopted a new cat.

We got her and she was de-clawed, partially blind, totally cross-eyed, and diabetic. She required insulin twice a day, and completely hated other cats.

Well we've had her 2 months I think now, and we've gotten her completely off of DRY food [which is horrible for cats, FYI], and her blood sugar levels are normal now that she's on only wet food. So her diabetes is in remission completely and we don't have to get her insulin anymore. She also gets along completely with our other 2 cats. We kept them apart for about a month and slowly let them smell each other, etc. and now everyone's a big happy family.

I just got back from the vet and they told me yeah she's in remission and it made me really happy,

here's cat pics for proof.

I love cats. Whatever dude. Fastest $600 I ever spent  [blood tests, insulin, vet visit, adoption fees, etc.] but totally worth it.

My buddy just spent $1000 trying to keep his cat alive a month ago, the cat had serious kidney problems and 3-4 days at the vet couldn't save him.

I loved that cat, so the unexpected death was not cool.

I always wondered how to better control animal population problems. Mandated tax-funded fixing? Releasing them into the wild afterwards? Would that cause the coyote populations to splurge? Would all the cats be eaten? IDK. Has to be something better than MILLIONS being in shelters in LOS ANGELES COUNTY alone.

Do some research,
or I can break it down for you.

Dry food has insane amounts of carbohydrates. Cats bodies absolutely cannot tolerate carbohydrates, and instantly get stored as fat. This leads to all kinds of things like UTI/liver failure/diabetes/etc. Cats are not 'bred' to DRINK water. They get water from MEAT [wet food] They hardly ever do. Wet food contains the water they need to survive and flush their systems out. To save money with our NON diabetic cats [because she HAS to eat only wet food because of low carb levels] We do about 1/2 cup dry food per day per 7 pounds. My 7 pound cat gets 1/4 wet and 1/4 dry each morning, my 14 pound gets 1/4 wet and 1/2 dry. If you insist on ony using dry food, you MUST MUST MUST mix water in with the food or they can get terrible Urinary tract infections.

If youre interested at all in this PM me or something and i can help you out. I've done a lot of research. PetSmart's AUTHORITY brand CANNED WET food is absolutely great for our diabetic. Very low carb content. Not as important for 'regular' cats, but mixing in wet food AND water with every feeding [scheduled feeding is best] is crucial, and will save you thousands down the road in vet bills/surgeries. I'd put all my cats on only wet food diet, but I'm too broke to get all 3 of them wet food, so the other 2 just have to deal with the dry stuff, but they're not diabetic so it's not a huge issue.

Example, our cat became diabetic in the shelter. They gave her dry food [tons of carbs] and her body went into hyperglycemic states and she gained tons of weight. They counter this with insulin to balance here. After we got her home we stopped the dry food [no carbs] thus there's no reason to balance her carb intake with insulin because guess what, there's no carbs in her diet.

I love the Internet. PM me or post here if you wanna know more  But bottom line is that wet food is always better, and if you can't do that, at least add water to dry food and add a 1/4 can [of say a 5.5oz can] to each meal for each cat.

I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH

Cats are carnivores, they eat primarily proteins and fats. No cut is too greasy for a cat.

But! Dry food almost always contains a lot of carbs, starch, whereas wet food are typically meat and fish, so almost no carbs.

Carbs are bad for cats. They are NOT made to digest it. Many cats can live off of dry food only, or half and half, but it just aint healthy, and a good number of cats gets sick of it, especially later in life.

The only reason for dry food is as an emergency food if s/he has to be alone for a long stretch that would spoil wet food.

Abolutely. I just give our other one's dry food for money reasons. Can;t afoord to buy all wet canned foot for 3 fatties, but we give them water and wet food along with good healthy REAL dry food.

I just dont know if I should bite the bullet [lame]] and just buy them more wet food and ditch the dry stuff all together. what we're doing now seems to work. our old cat died at 19 and she died frmo a cat fight, and ate nothing but garbage friskies

I shared my story with happy vibes, nothing sad about it in my opinion. Good memories. Just sharing a similar story that I felt was relevant.

It wasn't bad, he just had to have prescription cat food. It was controlled, he lived a long and happy life. Best cat my family has ever had.
