Way to come off like a total dick. So just because you managed 5+ years anyone who doesn't match you is to be laughed at huh?

You sound like one of those people who thinks his way is the right/only way, and that everyone else should follow.

Pull your head out of your arse mate.

its funny cause its true

i didnt mean that with malice or ill intention by the way

i mean it completely bluntly

i will say though i like you as a poster and i would give you 5 shrooms for your posts in here alone

your really brought some great perspective into a highly undiscussed/reviewed topic

me and you have drastically different spiritual approaches to sexuality though even including masturbation because i believe that sex and masturbation are like drugs

sometimes the experiences can be immensely spiritual and other times its pretty much the cheapest short lived and unsatisfying sense of "euphoria" i can say i ever experienced

i can assure you as far as benefits to the soul is concerned that a good session of Olympics style sex acts can really make a man feel alive (im sure women would agree) but at other times its just plain embarrassing and a mistake

I want to say like a year and a half, but truth be told It's been like 8 years. Nothing after that was an actual relationship. It was more hook ups and FWB

So i looked it up: Celibacy and abstinence are basically synomous with each other, often used interchangably. Only notable difference is celibacy is often motivated by religious reasons and involves not be married.

OK - this topic has raised my interest. As a woman, I am not sure why celibacy has to be a thing. Not saying that it is for anyone in these discussions but throughout my life, I have known many men who have gone celibate for one reason or another, yet I do not know any women who have used such a term. Why do men perhaps feel they need to go celibate? Or is it even a male thing? Also what intrigues me is what does one understand from one's self when it comes to being celibate. I mean there have been times in my life when physical intimacy has not been present but have never viewed it as being celibate or having a need to be...this topic truly intrigues me.

Fascinating perspective TE. You know I'd never considered it but you're right; I've never heard of a woman going celibate either. I mean I'm sure it happens - there are those that women that take vows like those who go into robes in Buddhism or the Catholic Church - but there's far fewer IME and I've never heard of a woman going on a mission of celibacy like I've heard so many men do outside of a holy oath.

My suspicion as to the reasons why are as follows:

1. Men are more blatantly sexual. I mean as in to say; most men will have sex with almost any female, given the opportunity, IMO/IME. It seems to be some kind of evolutionary trait that I've noticed. After all, women get the final say in who they have sex with, whilst for men, so many play the numbers game. Seems to me a vast majority of men will have sex with a 'viable' female based on nothing more than looks alone, whilst it strikes me that for most women, it takes a lot more than that.

2. Masculine energy is the one that forces forward, whilst feminine energy is the one that resists and considers and opens, IMO. If that is the case, as I suspect, it would strike me that it would make sense, as a male, to learn to tame that energy. Perhaps for a female that energy is already 'tamed'?

3. Retention of vital fluids. I know that there are many doctrines (e.g tantra), that suggest that males should resist the spilling of ones semen, and that in doing so one can retain vital energy (chi?). That side has been touted by some above in this thread, although I have yet to find any benefit in it myself. It seems a lot easier for most women to retain vital fluids and achieve orgasm, whilst for most men this is the very point.

Wonderfully thought provoking question I might add, I'm glad you came along to ask it!!!!

Very interesting observations. Thank you!

I have often wondered if many who enter celibacy also do so due to lack of the need to be sexually active / element of asexuality.

Sex is often seen as essential. Yes - we need to eat food in order to survive but we don't need to have sex (excluding the primitive notion to carry on the lineage). I have been wondering if people who go/stay celibate for a long period of time by choice are people have low or no sex drive but yes your observations make sense and are also what I have been thinking about.

But celibacy by choice does seem it is more of a male "thing" in the vast majority. Perhaps asexuality is more of a female "thing" as know many who are asexual on the female gender side.

I wonder about this too. There seems to be a good number of 'asexual' males out there based on my observations, much like there are a good number of males to whom music is not a huge thing. Some men seem to be perfectly content with going years without sex, whilst to others, the thought of mere months strikes fear.

Now this is something that really provokes my thoughts. For what reason are some males more sexual than others? Or for that matter, why does the same not seem to apply to females?

Could it be due to force of powerful genetics perhaps? Or maybe just hormone levels? Or insecurities from cultural conditioning? Or maybe early/childhood programming/experiences?

Fuck, you're making me feel like I wanna go and conduct a study....

It seems to me that sex is more optional for men while more "required" for females, like females cant go full celibate, at least not long term.

Might have to do with hormones and the need to reproduce in women is stronger.

Absolutely, I know of men who just don't seem very interested in sex at all, even if they have easy access to it. A friend of mine was married to a guy for 10 years, and they had sex maybe 50 times in that period, and according to her, he never showed much interest or enjoyment in it even when they did it. I cannot imagine being like this, but for him, it apparently worked that way.

The same does apply to women. In fact, it seems to me that there are more women who can deal with longer periods without sex than there are men who are the same way. They seem to fall apart into two categories: women who are virtually asexual and never express much interest in sex, and women who can put their sexual desires into the fridge when they are single or when their relationship somehow doesn't work sexually. The latter category seems to be much larger than the former, but going on my own experiences and the people I have encountered, it certainly seems that there are (at least) as many asexual women as there are asexual men. Men who do have a normal to high sex drive, but are capable of parking it without acting on it, seem to be a bit scarcer than women who manage to do so, in my subjective view. However, it would be interesting to gather hard data on this, as all I have is anecdotal evidence based on talking to friends and observations in the dating scene.
