this thread has inspired me.
I went outside and took a maple sappling off a root and have it in my homemade bubble cloned hoping I'll get roots.

I also dug up a sapplong growing off the roots of some bush out front with small leaves, seems like a good plant to start with. I put this one in soil right away as it had one tiny root.

Amazing pics, they really are picture perfect miniature trees.

Has anyone tried to bonsai a Mimosa hostilis? Seems like a good candidate for the fast and vigorous growth, and of course because you know... root pruning and all that

I have never made a bonsai, how big do you let the tree grow before starting to train it?

It varies, some prune as they grow and some also plant into the ground, let it get a Thick trunk, then chop it right down and allow regrowth, then train it, I think they need a degree of wiring etc as they grow though. I'm not very experienced myself I just love them though haha

I didn't realize there was a bonsai thread. I have some things I am growing for bonsai. Acacias, Kashmiri cypress, lemon eucalyptus, my Adansonia seedlings, and my Adeniums.  Yeah.  .I'll have to come back to this thread. I really enjoy Bonsai and Penjing

Azalea

Juniper

And lastly one I've grown from a cutting, so far it's been 4 years in quiet a large pot, I prune twice a year so the tree will have a tapered look to it, not sure of the exact name but I know this is a hibiscus of some sort

I wouldn't say most plants, looking around my collection a lot of plants have too big leaves, grow as vines or too shrubby etc. I know there are techniques for making smaller leaves etc but still, it seems strange to do with plenty of plants though I'd love to see people try them.

Most trees though? that may be true

I don't have real experience with bonsai myself apart from having a ficus on the rocks, a plant I got that is halfway into bonsai mode anyway and I have wired it.

Also grew Giant Sequoia for it but got 1/2 germination and it somehow lost its root immediately. Now I have Moringa species (only growing M. Drouhardii at this moment) meant to be bonsai'd.

Not per se taking it to the max like in those pics ^ but rather a casual version which also keeps the size manageable for me indoors.

I don't know how different M. Hostilis is from A. Maidenii but I have the latter and find it hardly conductive to bonsai personally.

Anyone else casually bonsaiing to keep trees indoors?

Those are amazing. I'd really love to get into bonsai. My uncle had a huge influence on my life. As a child, he got me into computers, playing guitar, playing dungeons and dragons, and gardening. He had a greenhouse and had several bonsais. I'd love to learn.
