(Grow log) First grow - mini monotub (Update: Complete) * 1

All finished with the first flush. I have no idea what the next flush will bring if anything, but 50.3 dry grams! Couldn't have done it without the guidance and information of the people on shroomery!



5 trays of mush about to get their mind opening elements locked in by the dehydrator! 8 hours at 70c does the trick



First step in making sure the next generation goes forth




This is a pic of when I woke up today, then continued to pick them at lunch, dinner and before bed. Its mad how fast they grow in the later stages!



Update! They dont seem to be aborting so i should be in business!



Update! First primordia! Couple others but this is the best looking one!



Also this is the knots pictured below as they go into more of a primordia stage



Had a scare that this was early trich, but as you see from the log progressing...it was only a massive cluster of hyphal knots!




(Below is just the prep part of log)


OK so only had the little over the equivalent of a quart jar of spawn, so I did a mini monotub! (its a 21 liter tub from IKEA) Unmodified monotub just seemed more forgiving than making a SGFC for a newbie like me.

Please comment/critique!

Preparation/Day 1

Here is the 'block' of spawn i got in the kit


Next i prepared the substrate of coir and verm. I added a big handful of vermiculite (15% by volume approx), 130g of coir, and 1100ml of boiling water. I then let it cook in slow cooker for an hour. I know this hasnt accomplished much for the sterility of the substrate, but from the teks i saw it was recommend to cook the coir as the myc like it more. Anything for you myc!


The bottom of the block i got had perilte on it for if you used the 'choke bag' that comes with the kit (Shroomerites gave it this name, not me. Shitty FAE) I rubbed this off as I never see perilte as a component of substrate mixes. I then broke up the block in my tub


It took like 2+ hours for the substrate to cool off and when it did i mixed it in with the spawn


Here is the chamber after its first sleep! Note that i am not using the laundry bin/clothes as some blocker for side pins. Its just that my 'room temperature' is more like 17 degrees, not 20, so i wanted to make sure the lil mycelium feet weren't cold  :facepalm3: The lid is on as its designed (not flipped) currently and I will only open to mist it twice daily. Once it is recolonized i will give it more FAE/Mists/love, etc. (Hope that is right!)

Only 36 lhour so nothing significant, BUT the myc is obviously growing from this pic so at least I know my temps haven't stalled it...yet!

Cool dude, good luck.  It should work out fine.  You don't need to worry about blocking light for side pins (I assume that's what you're doing).  Its more based on proper surface conditions.  After it colonizes just make sure the surface has small beads of moisture on it and you should be good

Yeah I messed up and got a kit, trying to make the best of a bad situation. It passed the smell test but now ya have me worried. It is perlite, but as I mentioned above I took it off before mixing with sub.

gotcha, yeah, you will notice when it starts colonizing that it creates some warmth and the tub will be warmer than the surrounding air.  Just wait and see, nothing you can really worry about.  I love Mushboy.  Mushboy gave me one of these:horrified: when the PE shoebox tubs in my sig were colonizing.  Those turned out OK :shrug:

I must confess... misting 3-4 times a day as every time I check it the surface water beads are gone and looks pretty dry. Seems a lot of peeps go straight to 'fruiting' conditions anyway so me opening it up more shouldn't be a problem right? Bit worried I started off with too dry of a substrate but as I was mixing it I squeezed it and few drips did come out.... Gah! All part of the learning process. Mycelium is really taking off though, so I guess I am keeping them happy!

From a lot of threads I am seeing bacterial tub go to produce but the obv are not ideal and don't look as pretty. I literally have no eye for stuff like trick vs knots but sure all with time!

It looks a little bacterial. Give it a week and then case with coir if you don't have fruits.

Very much so! They aren't the prettiest but happy for first grow. Hope to get some decent ones to print and find me a strain that's pretty with a few shoeboxes next.

Old-Ish post I know, but thanks for sharing your experience.

I've basically gone and done the exact same thing, except I've bought 4x 1200ml kits of 3x different strains.
