The Pereskia and Pereskiopsis mega-thread. All things leaf-cactus. * 3
    #24449322 -

Hello everyone.

At the suggestion of others, I thought I would create a thread about our favorite grafting stock. Pereskiopsis.

Pereskia and Pereskiopsis are generally called leaf cacti, by people who grow them and use them. Many people even often call the variety specifically used for grafting (spath/s), because its botanical name is: Pereskiopsis spathulata.

Pereskia and Pereskiopsis are New world plants that range from mexico and central america, down into south america, to about Argentina and Chile.

depending on variety they can withstand some extremes of both overwatering and underwatering. This makes them attractive for care reasons. Secondly, they have a fairly fast growth rate. Thirdly they readily make cuttings and root well, even from a leaflet.

Some varieties are used for grafting. The 2 varieties that I am most familiar with, are Pereskiopsis spathulata, and Pereskiopsis porteri.
Now, I am not a Botanist. . But, I can give a small amount of insight as to what I know about these 2, often used grafting varieties.

The Spaths in my opinion have a tendency to get wooley, or hairy. It is a phenomenon that I often see in other people's leaf cacti. I do not see this too much in my Porteri's. I have grown my Porters in different environmental conditions both indoor and outdoor, and dont see much wool growth. What I have observed, is that my porters in the house both etiolate easy and have thinner leaves. The ones outdoors have wider leaves with some degree of (red) at the tips of the leaves, which I am sure is a sign of C.A.M. Metabolism.

My Pereskia weberiana is a relative of the (Spath) from Bolivia. It shares many of the same qualities of spaths but generally has a more wispy growth habit. Its leaflets are more rounded and thinner. It has pretty little pink flowers. While Spaths have a solid stem/trunk, the Pereskia weberiana has a growth habit that isn't as well suited for grafting. Now, I imagine you could graft a Pereskia to Pereskiopsis, but I haven't done so yet. They are close enough in morphology and in the same clade. One day I'll try and cross pollenate them.

This pot has Both a Pereskia weberiana and a Pereskiopsis porteri. Note the differences in growth habit.

Although a little out of focus, here is a photo of the Pereskia weberiana.

Here is the upper portion with the Pereskiopsis porteri.

Here is photo of my Pereskiopsis porteri in the greenhouse. Note the edges of the pointed leaves blushed in red.(C.A.M)

Another photo if my Pereskiopsis porteri in the greenhouse.

I am not sure if anyone else here has, or is growing the porteri, but I will say that it makes a robust grafting medium. Especially, if the they have been given an outdoor or high light hardening prior to graft.

Lets see what the rest of you say.
Miss-K

Aww yes, pereskiopsis. The thing i love and loathe equally.

I havent used any in about 3 seasons. High Humidity is what i recommend when doing any grafting. No tape. No clothes pins just high humidity and you should be good.

Good stuff Miss K. :grampofapproval:

Great info Ms. K, thanks a lot for posting!

So I think most of my stock is spathulata based on the wool, but for these I'm not sure.
Maybe they came from an older porteri plant but I don't know, they look different. They're very thick with long (~2cm) white spines and large leaves (this pic is old) that get reddish on new growth.
They came labeled as "Pereskiopsis sp. Gigant" but they could be P. diguetii from what I could gather on the web just now. The one on the right is a crest, probably porteri.

5 new cuttings of advertised as "P. spathulatha (porteri)" reserved for a special someone on the shroomery

Outdoor version

I do had some of this clone that showed a bit of wool at some point, but it seems they grew out of it..

Here's an example of a wooly one, they do seem to have less and less wool as they grow up.

Not sure on the type of pereskiopsis, but they do interesting stuff when they run out of head room

There's actually 2 in that tangle, should think about pruning and rooting a few clones ready for grafting

Some pereskiopsis mass propagation :

Before :

After : (I've removed the pups to let only one per stalk for grafting purposes.)

And the mothers are pupping nicely :

Pereskiopsis cuttings behave strangely. They tend to put out 2 or three pups before putting out roots. Also, the roots come from the areoles that are underground. I've noticed that root buds can appear in no more than three days. But they need two weeks to start growing. Some stalks are also late to put out new growth, the base starts rotting, then it heals on its own and starts growing after all the others.

I noticed on your Pereskiopsis, Argyreia that there is little wool or hairs around the areoles. What variety are they?

Just Curious..

I don't know at all. I bought my first cuttings three years ago and they were just labelled as "perekiopsis porteri (spathulata)" so I don't really know what they are.

mine look like shit. i originally bought them to use on my seedlings but after planting them they have barely grown and the new sprouts are all horizontal of extremely curved, the leaves are tiny and the stems are thin. iv been planning on getting a larger container and replanting them in hopes they grow better

How do you keep them? That type of leaves is pretty typical of plants grown in full sun; if that's the case, moving them to a shadier spot will have them put out bigger leaves (and less spines, BTW). Having some gentle wind blow on them will promote thicker stems as well. They also look pretty dry, Pereskiopsis loves water and fertilizer when in active growth and should not be kept completely dry over winter either, or they'll be slow to restart growth in spring.

they are a little jumbled were they are atm because a day or two ago I moved things around and haven’t really reorganized them yet. they are in full sun on a bench with the other cacti, they get watered every morning but with the summer heat they dry out pretty quickly. I have been meaning to put them all into a larger container with more root space and water retention, but none of them seem very good candidates to focus on propagating, even when they were properly positioned they all seemed to grow in some weird curve or put out new growth that’s perfectly horizontal to ground which seems to me to make them all useless for graphing.

does it matter if they are acclimated to full sun with tiny leaves? I do plan on using them to grow trichs and lophs seedlings, I assume a graphed loph still needs partial shade.

also how water loveing are they? like water tray level?

The horizontal growth is its normal way of sending branches, but that's something you want to avoid in grafting stock. Cut them and stick them vertically on dirt and they'll grow straight up - until they start to branch, that is.
I'm not sure if I got what you meant by having them used to full sun and then grafting them to scions that will live in partial shade. It kind of defeats the purpose, does it not? I mean, more and bigger leaves are the plant's way of reacting to shadier conditions - presumably trying to make up for less radiation with a larger leaf surface. If you don't grow them that way, they won't have a chance to compensate once they have a scion on their shoulders...

So if I plan on growing a loph which will require partial shade I should plant and grow my graph stock in the shade as well?

It would seem the logical thing to do. I grow all my Pereskiopsis in half shade, anyway.

Peres grove started from 2-3" cuttings about 3 weeks ago in yogurt cups. A lot of grafting is expected later in the year.
