Shake testing jars for recovery * 5
    #24054079 -

We all want to either fruit our grains, or expand our grains. but how do we know if the jar is free
of any hidden contams/bacteria? They can hide easily and can be tricky to spot.

a shake test is done to help us observe how the myc recovers. If it recovers you are good
to go. its not 100% sure thing, but it sure beats the 'crapshots' we try to avoid.

If a jar does not recover then we do not use it to expand. What you do with it is up to you.
truly serious growers will just toss it because they have countless other jars going.
who cares if you drop a french fry from your super megasized fries? you got tons more.
others topfruit or dawwgy bag it, or whatever else.

this is just a visual post of sorts. feel free to post your own recoveries or offer
advice. I know we have the how it should/should not look thread but another voice
in the crowd of misinformation is never bad.
someone recently said layering g2g is good because bacteria cant grow between the layers... insert lolwut wutermelon gif here.

I do not have a pre shake pic:facepalm:

this is right after a shake. like 2 seconds later.(btw if you cant break up the grains
with a quick wack on your hand/padded surface you should not go forward..just my opinion, man)

12hrs

36hrs

nice. clean recovery(will update with 48hrs + right before spawning/expanding.)

This jar gave me issues when i tried to break it up. was shaken last week to the day. 7 days.
It would only break up into 3 or 4 larger chunks. i was beating this jar like crazy.

clearly not a good choice. the myc has shrunk inside the jar, the shake never recovered
and if used this would sit in a mix of coco and basically rot. this would be a forest of green.

this is really important to pay attention too!! to new growers! focus on this!
not some outlandish fruiting chamber.

do thy bidding.

Nice post mushboy! Shaking is always a good way to recognize contaminated spawn. There are so many molds/bacterial contamination that resembles white mycelium. Great for noobs .

In some other thread I was saying that if a jar looks dodgy some will just case it and fruit it. If you had shaken the jar it might not recover at all and you might get nothing at all from it. But you do not have to shake the entire jar up. The top layer is usually the first bit to break away, and if you tap the jars just at the top it is easy enough to dislodge only some of the grains at the top. Now if these do not recover you can scoop them out and case the unshaken intact grains below and still might get something from the jar.

You could also stick it in an SAB and ruffle up just the top grains with a sterile spoon or fork too.

Just shook my 99.9% visibly colonized jars. This is a pretty sure fire way to tell if they're ok? Anyway, shaken now. Will take pics at 12 and 24 and 48 hours.

if they recover quickly, you got decent spawn. i dont think ive had failed spawn from
quick recovering grains. its always from slower recovery/difficult to shake.

post pics! good place to share:stoned:

Not sure fire no, but it can help determine if spawn is really not good

12-15 hours or so after shake. Not a whole lot going on, but pretty uniform white myc poking out of the grains in same form in all jars. Seems ok.

Looks gerd to mer.  Recovery is slow for a day or two but if the jar is healthy it'll take right off after that.

Out of curiousity, what is the point of ruffling a few grains on top?
Does it have soething to do with FAE?

And one last question while we are on the subject! Say i was to fruit grain right out of jar. Is there a good way to prevent side pinning?

BUMP and i never posed the resulting grow from that jar:facepalm3:

put out 2.5 oz dry in the first 2 flushes. typical results from MS. i took a clone of this too. pics to come for that.

You ruffle them up to see if they recover. Same as what I said about shaking only grains at the top, but more controlled. Sometimes if you do manage to shake grains at the top it will break off in a wedge shape on one side. So it this is later discarded your undisturbed grains do not have a level surface (unless you scrape out even more to make it level). If you just disturb a few grains with a fork or spoon you can just do a top thin layer.
