Shake jars imediatly after steralization or later?
    #675020 - 06/12/02 03:39 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

When I tried millet seed and water in quart jars my last attempt, I lost 2 jars because those were the two jars I didn't shake. The other jars I shook, but only AFTER I innoculated with the syringe.

Now I was told by a wise man to shake the jars only after you inoculate, so that you distribute the the spores.

Now I just read something in the FAQ that says to shake the jars immediatly after they are done being pressure cooked... meaning when their still burning hot put some oven mits on and shake them.

What is the deal here?

My dog's bitch's lawer's sister shakes them as soon as they come out of the pressure cooker. It takes about 60 minutes for the pressure to go down enough to open the cooker. She has also, in the past, shaken the jars after innoculation, which doesn't seem to make a difference. The reason you shake after they come out of the pressure cooker is so you don't end up with a clumped up mess which has to be dug out of jars.

Ah yes... so shaking the jars right after pressure cooking them is easier because the grains are loose correct?

I do both, and then again three or four days later.
