Should you ever shake or stir the mixture in the innoculating jars?

No. All I've ever really studied, in depth, is the rye- mason jar technique. Considering the texture of the seed I'd think it'd be similar to rye. But since I've never read up on it i think you should wait for a more knowledgeable cybersoul to properly answer your question.

I am using finch seed ... in quart canning jars w/ vermiculite ...
you are saying that is a "cake" ?

Any advice on to when / how to shake the jars w/ the birdseed ... I haven't seen anything mentioned about this ... everyone seems to just let their jars sit until colonized ..

once a day would be good i think, dont take my word for it, i just wanna bump this up so you can get someone else to reply, but when you do shake it, dont be too hard on them or theyll bruise.

Once a day is way to much!
First time after inoculation.
Then when there are first signs of growth, when 5% of the visible area is covered with mycelium.(app 3-5 days after inoculation)
This should suffice.
Perhaps one more time 4 or 5 days after that, but it?s not necessary.
