Depending upon species you will need far far more FAE than you have going on.

I agree wholeheartedly - Fruiting even in open air in my house wasn't enough FAE for oysters- It wasn't until I built  a GreenHouse with a fan in and a fan ducted out the window (that last part is crucial) that I achieved proper FAE for them.

When melting 2 plastics together I like to try and mix the plastics up, with a nail or something. I usually actually use an old soldering iron tip so can mix it very well with that. You can see it entangling, especially if there are 2 colours. You might also have left over plastic from both things you cut up, you can use that itself sort of like soldering, melting more and mixing it in again.

Did you have the EU ones snapped in place before the PC run? I would always leave them unclipped, it can take some force to snap them in place and so when they are in the PC they will soften and stretch, then when cooled they remain in the stretched position. These snappy lids often have a really thin part, the hinge area, so this can stretch quite easily being so thin. Same reason people do not tighten twist on plastic lids before a PC run.

You could try to get them snapping right again if you were bothered trying. You can melt the tab area and deform it so it is shortened very slightly, or bent very slightly so that it is able to snap tight again. Another large container I had was not very tight to begin with. I removed the blue sealing ring and smeared silicone sealant into the groove, I then got a rounded end of a plastic pen and ran it around the groove. This meant the groove was effectively more shallow, so the blue ring was raised up when put back in, so the lid now snapped on very well.

Want to attempt to make those lids with a PP5 clear sterilite tub.  90mm is 3, and a half inches. 

Want to get a 3 and a half inch hole saw, and cut out circles in the tub using the drill puncture hole as the gas exchange port. 

Think that circles cut to that size will fit between the jar ring, and makeshift lids very nicely, plus withstand a 45 minute sterilization cycle.

Thanks blackout, I will try my soldering iron on some today. I definitely did mix the two when doing this just by rolling the melted plastics toward each other and pressing super hard.

Would you be using this in place of the metal lid with the rubber seal?

I would think that it wouldnt seal very well where your makeshift lid presses down onto the glass.

Idk for sure though maybe the ring would hold it down tight enough and evenly around.

Just a thought.

And would you be attaching(silicon) the plastic to the ring or leaving them as two pieces?

Also is there a clearer plastic to be used for the job?

got an upgraded pc. new in box. i dont think presto is still making it so im not sure the age but the original owner has passed on and passed this to me. cost: freefiddy.



^hold 7 quarts, not the 10 quarts that the presto 23 does but still an upgrade from this one that only holds 4 quarts.

Mine was an old soldering iron tip, I squashed it out flat using a bench vice. Plastic will ruin a good one, its a bitch to get clean again.

I have wrapped good tips in foil before, but it tends to come off. I also used some copper tube that I squashed in a bench vice so that it slotted onto the existing good tip. The heat transfers to the copper well. It does not get as hot as the soldering iron tip itself but this is a good thing, as it is usually too hot for plastic. Then using the old tip I usually let it heat up and then plug the soldering iron out so it is not too hot.

You can also just use an old knife or screwdriver held in a clean flame, you do not want soot getting into the plastic.

I think if a smooth enough cut can be made to the plastic that it would seal well.
Would probably require smoothing out the edge of the cut plastic with sand paper.
A precision sized cut would help with the sealing too.

No silicone.

Glass is the only thing I can think of that would be clearer than plastic.

Ok, a primitive tool but a tool none the less. I just made this carpet log from a remnant to use for breaking up my colonized jars. Not a bike tire but it works really well.

Nah, that's cool.  I use the old phone book wrapped in duct tape as my spawn breaker-upper.  Been rocking the same one for over five years now.
