hard drive cleaner?
    #2399223 - 03/03/04 05:27 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

i use a shredder now to delete sensitive files, but i've deleted things things in the past without doing anything special. is there a program that can write over any empty space on my disk and permanently erase anything i've already erased like a shredder would do?

low level format? It writes the entire space of the hard drive with just 0 or 1. Find out the manufacturer and they should have a program that will do it. I'm sure there are other programs out there you can find also.

Norton has a Wipe Info. There's also Eraser, which is great and will erase and re-write over your free space as many times as you want it to It also adds an "erase" option to the right click windows explorer menu. It also has a scheduler so it will wipe free space by itself.

You can't do a low-level format on today's drives. They are done once and once only: at the factory.

As for deleting files: I think the industry standard is to write 1's then 0's over the area of the drive a total of 30 times in a row. That should get rid of any remaining magnetics.

PGP has a utility in it that allows you to do this.

I've used BCWipe for some time now, and it's a pretty good erasing utility. It meets all U.S. DOD standards. It's a shell extension and what it does is basically write random 0's and 1's over the file to be 'shredded' seven tmes, assuring its destruction. It can also do the same with the empty space on a HD.

Ohhhhh, secureclean 4. Its a good program, it'll write over your free space and overwrite files up to 12 times. It claims that even with just one overwrite, its impossible to recover it. You can also scan your drive for recoverable items.
