Mummies? Mutants? Too dry? Weird strain?
    #2398302 -

I have a strain that grows super-aggressively on agar, "rice pudding" pf-tek jars, and wheat-grain bulk substrate. It fully colonizes grain-jar transfers in 5 days or so with healthy ropy mycelium. However, in both rice-pudding spore transfers and cased bulk wheat substrate, I get some funky looky dudes popping up in the first flush, gradually being replaced by more normal looking puppies in subsequent flushes. They get twisted and bent (like me), snap off clean from the base like chalk with a soft "pop!", and look greenish-bluish inside and somewhat dry, especially towards the base. Caps still look healthy, they will still spore if allowed.

Any ideas what this might be? Anyone experienced this? Would you eat them? Any comments much appreciated!

These came from this batch on 50/50+ casing:

These mega-mutants of the same strain came from a casing of pure vermiculite: (Huge swollen bases, shrunken caps, fluffy greenish inside--what a difference casing makes in expression!)

I've seen those before....happened to me in a low humidity, late stage infection of verticillium. Not sure if the verticillium had anything to do with it, but i'd bet the humidity did.

Whats your RH near the mushies? I bet that is the problem as well.

Penalties against drug use should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against the possession of marijuana and mushrooms in private for personal use.

Thanks for the comments... Humidity and fresh air are likely the problems as they seem to recover well once I start misting/exchanging them more often...  I also took a look at them under the microscope and couldn't make out anything other than healthy mycelium.  Bottoms up!  :crazy2:
