Verticillium Questions - Please HELP ! ! ! !
    #1002603 - 10/29/02 08:53 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I have two questions regarding verticillium. Please, if you read this and you know anything about it, POST A FRIGGIN ANSWER.

1. If I had this phenomenon occur in my casing's first flush, can the casing recover and have fairly healthy 2nd/3rd flushes if I drop the humidity to 80%?

2. Is it safe to eat the mushies from the first flush if I dry them completely? They were a bit soggy and had really bizaar growth with super funky cap shapes. I pitched about half of them cuz they just seemed a bit to close to rotting.

All help is much appreciated.

1. Maybe you won't get rid of the vert. but it is definately caused by too high humidity and inadequate air exchange.

2. Verticilium is non pathogenic, yes you can eat them when dry, as long as it is only verticilium.

Good luck

Can you tell us a bit more about verticilium?
I recently had a flush with rather moist caps, slightly deformed, with very poorly formed gills and little spore production. Temps were probably a bit too high, and humidity around 100%. Does this sound like verticillium or just excessive humidity?
Thanks

Tell tale signs for verticilium:
Deformed caps ~ caps look as though they have a 'hair lip', caps opening partially before the mushrooms is mature.
Deformed stems ~ Stems looking twisted and generally deformed, stems bend toward infected side.
Brown streaking ~ Can be seen on the base of the stem, tan in colour. Brown spots on stem.
Grey mycelium on cap and stem ~ A result of verticilium and high humidity.
Split stems ~ Stems twist and start to split.

Good luck
