this is something my brothers friend has done before... it interests me quite a bit as I aspire to adopt healthier eating habits (it sounds easier than it is)

That website is really neat... I had never heard about "Ontjom" and some of the other things on there.
anyone with experience?

apparently you can get free cultures of Rhizopus oligosporus from the USDA
http://www.channel1.com/users/bobwb/recipes/soymilk.htm
I wonder if they will give them to non-US citizens, if not someone should send me a culture too!

Europeans can get a free sample of tempeh starter from:
http://www.tempeh.info/
Quote:
When requesting a sample you agree that: - you have read on this website the instructions for making tempeh and that you promise to give it a try - you have the place or are able to build one that can function as an incubator (to keep temperature at 28 - 32?C) - you will inform us about your results.

well, we intend to give away tempeh starter... but: presently i only got a small sample from indonesia, will try to isolate, make sure to have the pure-culture of Ro !!, cultivate (on rice), (vacuum)-dry the spores, extract them, mix with ground rice (pre-sterilised!!) -thats it!!
any more hints about details anyone???
-do not like to reinvent the wheel...
thanks,
thomas

Thanks for your offer! (tempeh.info has not sent their free sample yet). Very nice of you! Your tempeh page has some links and info that might interests some of the members.. http://home.t-online.de/home/Biologische.Pilze/ro1.htm http://216.239.37.104/translate_c?hl=en&...e.Pilze/ro1.htm PubMed Central: http://tinyurl.com/3pxry

well in german we say the snake bites into her own tail... [as a prerequisite to give away is to get it propagated...] -so more hints would be helpfull ok, have sucked whatever data was accessible till now via google BUT: suppose the REAL stuff is available only in the basic books mentioned in the bibliografies/references due to our location far off access to these is rather uncomfortable to get...

Yeah, I also think about trying tempeh since this instructions says that you can use also normal beans (not only soy beans). I think the starter is not very expensive either.
Btw.: Where do you come from ? Just wondering cause you seem to be able to read the german instructions ...
