Compost pre-pic
    #2389201 - 02/29/04 08:23 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hi, Just wanted to let people interested in making there own compost see a few pics of the center of the pile at 157 degrees F. The white you see in the pic are called actinomycetes along with other thermo- fungi. The make up of the pile consisted of horse/donkey manure, wheat straw, chicken manure, molasses, and cottonseed meal so far. This is at phase 1 at 3 weeks into composting using a homemade bin. Watering once daily. You know your on the right track when you start seeing these guys growing and the temps getting hot in the pile. bluhoney

Sounds intriguing. Please provide details on the set up. Just how small is it? And what about phase II?

The set up is rather small, 2 bales of wheat straw(the bulk) in a square 4X4 lattece wood bin. The initial pile forming was windrowed in a horse stable, then after adding molasses, water, cottonseed meal to the manure/straw and ricking the pile for 1 week, the initial pile was formed in the bin. The pic above was taken at the third turn. At the second turn gypsum was added to keep the pile from becoming greasy. Phase II will be done in a bulk pasteurization room. The room is a converted garden shed. the directions are roughy used from "The Mushroom Cultivator" by Stamets and Chilton ," Bulk Room Design Features". Here is a pic of the inside. My upload limit has been met, so I will update later You can see the room will be divided in two. a wooden grate will be placed in the back half with the bottom vent under it. This will serve to hold the compost but allow air flow from the fan attached outside to blow under the pile then flow through and up to be taken back to the fan by the upper vent. On the pipes outside the room there will be an air damper to allow fresh air in to regulate the temps. The type fan used is a honey comb type found in heating and air home systems.By using this phase II, the pasturization process will be done when the compost completes, so when its ready, it will be spawned with Agaricus brunnescen stock right then, no worry with extra cleaning.
