The compost tumbler

I will be getting this size:This smaller size holds up to 9.5 bushels, equal to three, 30-gallon trash bags. It's the ideal choice for smaller properties and weekend gardeners. Drum sits 13" off the ground
42" High x 42" Wide x 33" Deep
Can I use this for making mushie compost? How would I go about this? Will a recipe out of TMC work in this?

It might be difficult to maintain the necessary self heating temperatures with the relatively small volume.

On the other hand, this recipe is for rather small quantities: http://www.mushroomadventures.com/compost.html

i PERSONALLY LIKE THE IDEA OF THESE. I did just read article about these in mother earth news that said the claims these companies make are BULLSHIT. Never tried one so no personal experience. just don't expect finished compost in less than a couple months. They are just pricey

Jahson, I think the difference is that their claims are optimal, meaning that someone took great care in formulating what goes into the bin, turning it on a proper schedule, and making sure the ingredients are mixed in thoroughly and at the exact time they should be. Very few gardeners will have this precision, but most cultivators will. I bet a gardener would have to wait several months if they just indiscriminatly added whatever they had to the compost pile. A cultivator however is much more likely to use the time tested formulas (or the scientific principles to come up with their own), and to be very precise in managing the compost.
I feel this way not because I ever had one, but I made one. I used a black plastic barrel of about 45 gallon capacity, and copied the design the compost tumbler to perfection. When I kept at it, I'd get a pretty good compost pretty quickly. When I didn't pay much attention to detail, it'd take a month or more.

That's a lot of compost that tumbler can make... I've made batches of compost in the past using a 40 gallon rubbermaid container on my patio with a few breathing holes, wrapped in old shipping blankets to keep in the heat, and used a shovel to churn it once to twice a day. Also used a meat thermometer to monitor temperature, and it stayed nice and cozy at about 145 F uniformly across the whole batch...
My problem, which you may experience, was that I had to waste all but 5 gallons of the compost; I just didn't have the grow space or amount of spawn for 35 gallons of compost.
Basicly the problem is that if you have excess compost you have to keep feeding it and keep it at those high temperatures for the thermophilles. You can't just stop the process, because if your excess compost cools down, your pesky mesophiles may get a foot hold again.
Has anyone had any luck storing compost? And if so, is it as good as fresh compost?

I don't really have any pics, I'm sure I posted some of it in action at some point in time. I used various formulas, based on what I had on hand, the info in TMC and GG&MM, and how experimental I wanted to be. You know, supplementing with oils (or molasses) type stuff which stamets goes into. I was playing back then, and doubt I used the same formula more than once. I also became very content with non-composted substrates, so I didn't bother making compost anymore.
If you need to store it, you may have luck drying it out, like mycotapro does his compost, I think that's the only way you'll get it to keep.
Oh and so far as wasting it, you can always use it outdoors, you could never make enough compost to fill up that big terrerium just outside your door!

Just read the post in the phase II thread, and some dude suggested freezing comopst for storage, thought it was a little applicable here as well.....

Buy a meat mixer on EBAY.
Small enough to work with in your house, big enough that it doesn't take all year to make about 300lbs.
