SSDs lifespan far far far far surpasses any mechanical HDD, and should due to no moving parts.

Anecdotally, I have a first gen Intel SSD that I've had for 7+ years now.. it's been written and unwritten a billion times, has had numerous OSes, and countless gigs of music, videos and shit on it and reformatted probably 100+ times.  It still performs flawlessly. The Intel Toolbox thingy says it has 99% life left. I could probably pass it down to my kids kids.
In that same timeframe since I've had my first SSD, I've gone through like 3 or 4 mechanical drives. SSDs have an abysmally low failure rate.
I heard all the scare stories in the early days on SSDs about after X number of writes the SSD will just go POOF! I've yet to see that happen. All my first gen SSDs are still going strong.
This was written 2 years ago, they are better now. Most good modern SSDs will be good well over 2-3 petabytes of writes.. which would take the average person only a few hundred years to achieve..
If you buy Intel or Samsung, you don't have anything to worry about. It will most likely outlive you.

In fact all my SSDs still work, I have like 7, have never had a problem with one. I couldn't tell you what a failed one looks like.
I've heard of them in the past and seen a few working in tech support.. but mainly due to manufacturing problems revolving around a specific company.. if an SSD is made correctly it should last a fucking long time.
Unless you have a shitty SSD *cough OCZ* or it is defective (rare).. there should be NO reason why a SSD should wear out before a mechanical HDD... like ever.

Really, the only argument for having a HDD over a SSD before, was because they were FAR cheaper than a SSD. The price per GB was pennies on the dollar. Key word - WAS.
I paid like $260 for a first gen 80GB SSD
Right now that will buy you a 1TB SSD.

HDDs will soon be obsolete because SSDs have continuously come down in cost to the point where it's almost better to buy nothing but SSDs.

A couple years ago, I was telling people to get 120GB SSDs and use that for their OS then get like a 1-2TB mechanical for mass data storage.. but only because of cost reasons.
Now... shit.. I can't think of many reasons to even get a mechanical HDD at all... when SSDs are so cheap.
SSDs are superior to mechanical drives in every single conceivable way.. the only downside previously was the cost..

Right now you can get a freaking 500GB Samsung SSD for $160. Most 1TBs are around 250-300 for a top end one.
Mechanical HDDs will soon be obsolete. I can't think of many reasons to keep them around, when SSDs are better in every way.
RAID setups on 1TB SSDs anyone? 1GB/s read/write speeds anyone?
Not to mention you can do multiple SSDs in RAID 0 and it seems they scale linearly no matter how many you add. Shit's gonna get cray.
Mechanical HDDs are the past.

Except maybe for this, this is the best possible use for a mechanical drive now:

SSHDs are a gimmick at best, and will not last. I thought they were dumb trash when they were first made and they still are.
It's just a mechanical HDD with a tiny SSD attached to it. Great... fantastic.
Except you could just do that yourself separately and achieve better results and soon HDDs will be obsolete anyway..
It's just dumb IMO to mix the old and new technologies in one package and think it's something special... it's not.
Especially now that 1TB SSDs have come into the affordable for most people range..

It's like, let's make a hybrid CRT/IPS monitor... We could call it CRIPTS... or let's not and say we did.

Exactly what I said earlier. The only reason can see the additional cache being useful is on some high end gaming rig running the latest games, what with their huge maps an all. Can you foresee any other circumstance in which they might actually be anything other than a gimmick?

No. When they first came around, people were already doing a similar concept by using a large mechanical HDD for mass storage and SSD to load OS and apps and most frequently used games and such.
Also IIRC the "cached" part of hybrids is flash memory that 'simulates' an SSD and isn't a true SSD and from tests I've seen is nowhere near as fast as SSDs.
For gaming the only time the hard drive is really working is during loading scenes and shit. The CPU/GPU is doing all the work 99% of the time.
SSHD you can't even choose what you want to store on the "mini" fake SSD, it chooses for you.
You want a mechanical drive, get a mechanical. You want the speed performance and reliability of an SSD, get an SSD. You want both? Have both, but fuck a hybrid.
A hybrid is MEH at both of those things. It tries to do both and in doing so falls short at both.
It's only 'fast' when it wants to be, most of the time it's not any faster than a HDD.. and is 1000x more likely to fail. An SSD is ALWAYS fast.

Quite simply it's a marketing gimmick to make more sales in the transition period between HDD and SSDs.

LOL. I should've known. I had my suspicions, but I didn't think they'd go this fucking far pushing the things that being the case.

I guess they bank on the fact that 95%+ of the population wouldn't even question it. Especially if they market it right. And from the manufacturer's perspective, it's a bit more revenue whilst we transition to full SSD drives once capacity becomes feasible.

I swear to fuck, it's little things like this, compounded year on year, that make me realise you basically cannot trust what anyone (other than close friends perhaps) tells you.

LOL it's just business as usual. Half of everything is marketing.. there's a new GPU every week, it's all just a slight upgrade over another. They do make progress though.

But you'd probably get mad at that too... for example in CPU/GPU land.. lots of times say the mid-level GPU (GTX 560) could be the exact same GPU chip as the GTX 580 (GF110), just with a bunch of CUDA cores disabled on the 560 where the 580 is a "fully enabled" GPU.
But there's valid reasons for that... the 580 GPUs would be the "cream of the crop" highest binned ones that pass all the tests where the 570s are also highly binned with some things disabled and the 560 ones didn't pass all the tests but did with some cores disabled etc..

Hybrid drives were just stupid from day 1 though.

It's generally only worth your money to wait about 3 generations of upgrades before you actually do, where you will see the most bang for your buck.

Anyway if you ever want advice just ask me, I eat sleep and breathe tech.

Thanks man, appreciate the offer. I don't have my finger on the pulse as much these days like when I was a DC op and hardware was my life, so am a bit rusty. Plus I don't game, so I don't need a lot of power.

But I do exactly as you say; build my own machines, run them constantly for 5-6 years, and then swap out the internals once something goes. It's not exactly costly and I experience very little degradation in performance between rebuilds.

It's OS support that pisses me off these days. I'm too lazy to go linux based, even though I quite easily could, and feel I should, and fucking Windows... I held on to XP until support went completely, and I can see myself doing the same with 7. I played on 10 recently and fucking hated it.

When I eventually build a desktop after settling in Australia, I'm gonna go Linux based and have a Windows laptop. What do you run at home?

10 is garbage.. I hate it. I run 7 64bit ultimate for gaming and various flavors of Linux for dicking around. You can always dual boot or boot from USB with Linux too

I have 10 on my laptop. I intended to wipe it and put windows 7 on it but just never got around to it. If I ever have to reformat and put on a new OS, it's going to be 7 for sure but I've kinda got used to 10 for the time being. It's not that bad. I had windows ME for a long time, so I'm well acquainted with just how bad Windows can be.

The only thing that really bothers me about windows 10 at this point, is the damn navigation and how they have everything laid out. It's so fucking unintuitive that I more often than not, just type the name of the file or  program I need into the search bar rather than try to track it down like I would on any other version of windows.
