Yes. Just upgraded my laptop to 1TB SSD & 16GB RAM. Thing is like fucking lightening.

That graphic doesn't cover SSHDs (aka hybrid drives) at all.

Quote:

In computing, a hybrid drive is a logical or physical storage device that combines a fast storage medium such as NAND flash solid-state drive (SSD) with a hard disk drive (HDD), with the intent of adding some of the speed of flash storage to the cost-effective storage capacity of traditional HDDs. The purpose of the SSD in a hybrid drive is to act as a cache for the data stored on the HDD, improving the overall performance by keeping copies of the most frequently used data on the faster SSD.

you're confusing hybrids with sold state, solid state isnt a hybrid, a hybrid is a mechanical with a huge cache

Solid-state drives
On many levels, solid-state drives are similar to hard drives. They usually connect to a system by way of the SATA interface (though PCI Express-based drives are also available for ultrahigh-performance applications), and they store files just as any other drive does. SSDs, however, eschew the magnetic platters and read/write heads of hard-disk drives in favor of nonvolatile NAND flash memory, so no mechanical parts or magnetic bits are involved.

Yeah, again that does not contradict what I said. I didn't claim that SSDs incorporate a mechanical drive. I claimed that SSHDs (aka hybrid drives) incorporate a mechanical hard drive and a SSD for use as a cache. Which they do.

You acknowledged yourself that a hybrid drive is a mechanical drive with a large cache. The only difference in what I said is that I claimed that a SSD is what is used for this cache. Do you believe this isn't the case? Or is it that you believe "SSHD" doesn't mean the same thing as "hybrid drive"?

yes, I did say that a hybrid is a mechanical with a really large cache, you stated
that solid state drives were "basically mechanical drives with a small SSD to cache
frequently used stuff" which is false since solid state drives are not mechanical,
they have no motors, no platters, no heads, no servos, none of the things that would
make them a hybrid or a mechanical drive. they are nothing but electronics

Do yourself a BIG favor and choose a SSD over a HDD when the time comes. SSD's, though more expensive, are the future. They are faster, noiseless and DO NOT BREAK DOWN.

I went epic on my new computer: 2x 512 GB SSD drives, watercooled factory overclocked hexcore i7, Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 graphics card, its a monster! Its so awesome, words cannot express. My computer farts and its started up, or has a program installed.

There's nothing a cheapass cuntputer can't do that an awesome heavy gaming rig can't do better.

Overkill? Fuck yeah. I got many problems but anemic computer performance isnt one of them.

Nope, I didn't say that about solid state drives. I said it about SSHDs (i.e. hybrid drives). Such as this one the OP was considering buying:

Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD  Its like $119.00 which is super cheap.

I haven't read the whole thread, but have read some of this page.

If you're trying to store information, an old-style SATA hard disk is what you want. Not only are they cheaper, but they last longer as well. SSD's are great for running an OS off of. That's all they are good for though. If you have a desktop, I'd suggest getting an SSD for your Operating System, and a large multi-terabyte drive for your file storage. Files like movies, music, software installation files, any photoshop or music creation resources.

Because the SSD slowly wears out, and the drive becomes smaller with continuous use. It's better to reserve all it's space purely to operation of an OS and certain program installations.

thats the downside of SSD, the cycling slowly wears it out and making certain parts non usable over time.

Ive read about programs that automatically defrag the SSD to evenly wear the entire drive.

Not sure on the lifespan of a SSD, but im sure it will last untill the next memory storage breakthru in a couple years. Technology advancemnets move fast!

Not at all, less than half that.

I still use optical drives alongside it of course (about 5TB worth), but any data that is important to me is stored in the cloud and replicated over several machines.

There's no way I'll risk losing data in this day and age.

Those SSHD's are pointless IMO. Boot from SSD, store bulk data across multiple HDD's, and put anything that's invaluable in the cloud.

I suppose they might help in a high end gaming rig, but they offer fuck all benefit for day to day shit if you're booting from SSD.

I can only guess that you are arguing for the sake of arguing at this point. You apparently think that "SSHD" means "solid state drive". I've never heard of anyone else using it in this way, but I clarified to you very early on in this exchange that, when I wrote "SSHD", I was talking about hybrid drives. Several times.

My original statement really makes no sense if you interpret "SSHD" as "solid state drive" anyway.
Quote:

If a SSHD is a solid state drive, and a SSD is a solid state drive, why am I contrasting them with two different terms? And how can a solid state drive be a subcomponent of itself?
