Aliens and Bright Stars
    #2374828 - 02/24/04 07:15 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

what's with all these aliens coming from bright, conspicuous, named stars and star groupings like Arcturus, Rigel, Vega, Sirius, Orion, the Pleiades etc. don't these aliens know anything about stellar evolution? most of these stars are way too young and hot to support life.

more likely if aliens exist they'll live around relatively dim, unknown G-type (sunlike) stars with names like HD938278 or SAO4239879.
but that wouldn't be very interesting now would it?

I guess if I was making up stories I'd want my characters to live in exotic locales.

Well, regarding these aliens, from what I've come to understand, they aren't as near as in the physical reality as we are. *shrugs*

Another thing you have to consider is that all life isn't going to take our form. Our standard of living isn't the same acrossed the Universe, you know?

I don't claim to know anything on the subject, I'm just taking a perspective. hehe.
Peace.

This is reminding me of last summer...

There was what we thought was a bright star in the sky most of the night, certainly for at least 4 hours.
Then at about 3.00am it decided to fly off...

We came to the thinking that some 'Stars' are just probes watching us, pretending to be stars.

But yeah I accept your logic, I don't like making theories/assumptions that far ahead.

Guess the aliens are not intelligent enough to turn the probe running lights off, eh?

On further thought, I really think it is a bad idea to really think that life has to fit our understanding of it, that life can only thrive in a place such as Earth. There is life at the bottom of our sea, in our deserts, fuckin' everywhere... Earth is full of a huge ass variety of life that covers a wide spectrum.

And all of that is specific on Earth and its setup. I don't really think we can decide that life has to require what it requires here to survive.
Peace.

life as we know it...
or even much life as we don't know it...
well, ya figure those big, fast-burning stars are gonna go through their sequence in a few hundred million years (or less, some of them...)
and a few hundred million years is hardly long enough for any planets nears that primary to do much more than cool down enough for water to be in liquid state... so by the time something, ummm, "organic" starts to happen, the star's core collapses & poof, a nova happens (or if it's large enough, k-boom, a supernova happens...) and, while having much of a star's outer layer is great for enriching nearby interstellar clouds with heavy elements (& remember, kiddies, anything heavier than iron requires hot & heavy stars to cook 'em up...), having the bulk of your primary's outer layer blow through the immediate environs just can't be good for the odd little pockets of negative entropy that we call "life" & the little spheres of rock that they live on... (& the remnants of a medium-small star like our sun eventually ends up a dwarf; the remnants of a medium star (after nova) is a neutron star, & the remnants of a big boy (say, greater than 3 solar masses) prolly end up as a black hole (after supernova)...
or that's what the astronomers say...
~
as to "life" - well let's assume that it will be water based (& carbon, OK...), and the water should be warmer than ice & cooler than steam (of course, variations in local atmospheric pressure will cause the m.p. & b.p. to vary from 0 deg C & 100 deg C...)
~
figure, maybe, life is fairly common wherever water is liquid long enough & there's enough organic stuff around to work with (& CHON aplenty in icy comet-stuff, infalling to planetary surface)...
evoloving into multicellular organisms complex enough to wonder about how they got to be where they are, well --- that takes time & luck (or time & god, whatever...)
~
ymmv...

The scientific perspective is a good one, and I considered it.. don't know enough about it, so I didn't follow further in that regard.

But, I mean, I'm just allowing it as a possibillity that life could manifest somewhere completely different than Earth and with completely different needs for survival, you know?
Peace.

yeah, it seems to me, at least on earth, that life is hard not to find...afterall, all whole earth is covered with the biosphere, a film of life...

Maybe the "aliens" are not hiding . Maybe They want us to find Them. It's just that the mankind seeks them in the wrong places. The Truth reveals itself in simple things not complicated ones.

I'm just suggesting from a rather uninformed perspective that it is a possibillity that life could thrive in a lot of different places. Its like.. how many places have we been to find life? How do we know? The only thing we know about what life needs has come from our look and our studies on life from this planet.

While what we have on Earth is definitely pro-life, that doesn't mean that it has to be like this.
Peace.

oh, i know. im agreeing with you. life probably exists in so many different ways and places, i couldnt even imagine it.

by the way, what makes life "life"? at what point does consciousness become life? at one point does existence become consciouness?

Good One

We seem to have evolved to a state where we take control of the elements of nature around us (electricity, air, water ect.) What if life could evolve it's self and it's technology enough to be able to survive anywhere???

I once saw a Far Side comic. It showed two angels standing on a cloud in outer space. The Earth could be seen off in the distance. The older angel was changing the batteries in one of many flashlights all pointing towards the Earth.

The "young" angel said "Wow! Our scientists told us that stars were balls of gas burning millions of miles away in space!"

The "old" angel says: "Heh...yeah, we get a kick out of those guys."

You're here because you know something.
What you know you can't explain,
But you feel it;
You've felt it your entire life.
That there's something wrong with the world.
You don't know what it is, but it's there....
Like a splinter in your mind...
Driving you mad.
