Rastafarian Etiquette? * 1
    #23406493 - 07/03/16 09:49 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

I've had dreadlocks for about a year now, and they're pretty long and obvious. When I'm out in public, other individuals with dreadlocks will wave at me and say things like, "Irie Rasta!" "Braddah am rastafari, bless!" "Blessings rasta, go in am bim bum Zion!"

:rasta:

But I'm a white guy, and I'm always kind of wondering what I should say back. I just usually kind of nod and smile. From what I understand though, it's an okay thing to say stuff back like, "Blessings rasta" or "Irie braddah," or something of that nature.

I don't want to come off as racist or anything, so I'm hesitant to consider myself a "real" Rastafarian, or anything near that even.

Any white guys with dreads on here have this happen to them? Any dreadlocked brothers and sisters on here that can weigh on on this?

I have a white male friend who has dreads almost to his knees. He gets this constantly from white and black people.
He sometimes says shit back but he isnt a rasta, just likes dreads so he mostly just nods and smiles.
Sometimes he will say blessings mon or some shit
He is actually from Barbados and had a bit of an accent..idk thats my 2 cents. Sorry i can't help more

Rastas are racist & misogynistic as fuck. Far from the peaceful hippie stoner image that Bob Marley listening white potheads have of Rastas.

Just be you man. One of my best friends talks like this, I normally put my hand or my fist on my heart and say 'peace out man' or 'much love brother'.

But then, I say that to everyone I like.

 look it up yourself. They're well known to hate white people & advocate violence against women. I'm talking real Rastas, not American or European potheads that like to pretend that they are & that people like you think are the real deal. Next time do a little research before you open your mouth & look stupid.

I have never met a person in this country who i think is a "real deal" rasta. You are looking stupid making assumptions about me and my perception of them. I could not care less what you have to say about any religion/race. You are ignorant. I answered a question regarding a friend of mine who has dreads and is NOT a rasta, but wears them because he fucking likes them and its part of his culture.

Look up any race/religion and you will find a ton of hatred wether it be agianst women, gays, other religions or whatever. This is common knowledge. Derp.

The question is whether it is relevant to OP's question. I'd think most of us would assume he's in the western part of the world but I suppose we can't be sure. So it may be relevant? But then again if OP lived in one of those countries I think he would know the answer to his question.

Or maybe I'm being an asshole and assuming too much myself. I dunno.

I just liked the hippie vibes of the thread more :rasta:

You're doing it right now, being racist.

You can be a real Rastafarian and not be black, question is -- ARE YOU?

:rastafari:

Even if you're not, if you mean what you say there is nothing offensive about a cheerful and heartfelt "Jah Bless!" in answer to such a greeting. They validate you, you validate them.

It takes confidence but, if you mean it you only do good with it. If you got Jah in your heart let Him jump off your tongue towards them with cheer.

Totally sufficient.
You can show good will towards others, or you can even ignore them as you are not obligated to respond to people complimenting or otherwise calling attention to your appearance in public.

Personally used to engage people about dreadlocks in Shaivism, but your reasoning for having dreadlocks is (presumably) personal and the same may not apply to you.

Just do whatever you feel comfortable with.

I once considered rastafari and researched it quite a bit. While you can be white in this religion it's kind of a joke with the whole history of rastafari and Africa...zion and what not. I honestly can't remember the details. There's a rastafari forum somewhere on the net that was also totally thrashing white guys who wanted to take it seriously, for the guys here arguing about it. Rastafari is more than Christianity plus pot smoking and the whole hair beard thing....I can't even grow a beard :jah:

I used to think Rastafarianism was cool until I researched it a bit more and realised that it's just a black supremacist movement.

unless you believe that the second coming of Christ has already occurred and was a black leader in Africa, then you are not a rasta.  keep just doing the smile and nod thing.  or cut/brush your hair
