FUCK ANYTHING THE SO CALLED "OTHER YOU" SAYS!

If you grab that hand, there is a risk, the probability of which we cannot know, that you enter a time loop of exactly the same events, between 3 years old and now, that repeats itself infinitely.

Not a thousand times, not a million or billion times, an infinite number of times, exactly the same, forever disconnected from birth or death and whatever comes after death. Death we fear like nothing.. but wouldn't this very possibly be a fate worse than death?

Think about it, forever and ever and ever, a tight closed loop of exactly the same, cut off from the whole universe but those mere few decades, from that point of view, over and over, no breaks, no salvation, a broken record stuck in time.

That risk, the risk that THAT ATROCITY might be your eternal fate, no matter how great or small the risk or no matter how happy your life has been, that risk of eternal stagnance is so menacing that there is ONLY ONE RIGHT ANSWER and that is to choose death, to let the nuke do its thing and the universe do its thing with you thereafter.

except, this isn't time travel--this is travelling to an alternate world--even if there is a danger of repeating, eventually one would arrive at an alternate reality where the nuclear disaster doesn't happen, or where they decide to finally die

also, if one is truly able to notice hints that all this has happened before (as is suggested by the future self), then it is arguable that a possible loop would eventually be realized and ended

or is this an evil demon thought experiment, where i cannot trust any of the information i recieve?

This is planet earth, we do not yet know the exact nature of the universe. Some scientists say "this is it" and others say "many universes"

You ASSUME that there are many universes and ways of entering them. Its a gamble of finite knowledge on a potentially infinite outcome though.

If its a one-way universe, that other you might well have been Satan, rushing your immortal soul into a Hell of your own choosing

I picked no.  Death is not the worst thing that could ever happen, and if everybody I ever knew or loved was going to die in that moment as well, why not just let it happen?

It's not like that three year old would be ME anyway.  I die either way, why would I risk the possibility of some sort of infinite groundhog day event happening?

Not to mention, if I were to answer no and not take his (my) hand, he never would have existed in the first place and therefore if he is standing there he isn't actually me and is likely trying to trick me into something.

so... it is an evil demon thought experiment

if i can't trust the other 'me' when i am told that i will travel to an alternate world or that i will be able to notice hints of this former life--if this 'me' is just satan feeding me lies--then why should i assume that my decision will matter at all--why wouldn't satan just do whatever he wants, regardless?

You will be transported back to the exact moment in time when you blew out the 3 candles on your birthday cake, what happens next is anyones guess. So, 1959 with all the same family and no memories of for instance buying Microsoft and Google stock before it was cool

You will be put back exactly in a second of your third birthday, what happens then is interesting discussion foddder, it would depend on how the universe and reality  works.

Gotcha.

Unlike Einstein I accept the validity of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle.  I believe I would be a very different person at 59 from that start than I am now.

I was always afraid of the manner in which i will die. Being aware that my death will come instantly and with no pain through a nuclear strike is nothing short of a miracle. A painless death? I cant pass that up. No way.

This can easily be accomplished with a shotgun or massive drug overdose.

it cant be accomplished with a shotgun or drug overdose because those things would need to be initiated by me. im not suicidal.

No. The whole world would be dying with you. Its definitely not suicide.

If you choose death, its being inflicted by something out of your hands. this is why its not really suicide.

Suicide is when you take yourself out of the world. Not when you take the whole world out with you.

but ill agree to disagree

So just take the ride until your ready to not take buddies hand anymore. You said you have a feeling of something not being right on your new lives. Maybe after enough times you figure it out and can foresee the blast and the led gloves. Maybe you hold out until you know what buddies all about and you have to keep buddy in your world to die from the blast too.

Its not considered suicide if the rest of the world is going to die with you. Whether its your choice or not.

trust me i do see your point, though.

Yes. I think self-preservation is the strongest human inclination. Most humans will choose almost anything over death, so I think if the scenario were true, 99% of people would take the hand. I would. My life has been pretty awesome, I'll take my chances at it again.
