CDROM drive setup in a blank system...

So i found the right bios to flash the compaq into a non-compaq state....and it recognizes that it has a cd-rw drive attached to it...but whenever i attempt to access the drive i get an "invalid media" message and have to choose abort retry fail.
I'm going to try to get the drivers setup thru a config.sys file, but i'm completely new to the windows systems past 98.
Any suggestions?

Which Windows version? If it is 2000 or higher, you don't need any special drivers (at least if it's an atapi ide drive, and it probably is since Windows finds a cd-rw drive).

Have you tried different cd's? I've come about packages where all ten cd's are bust.

Also, some old cd burning software doesn't work well with Windows XP (since it got built-in support which conflicts). If you've installed an old package, try removing it and use the built-in.

Ok, i'm attempting to get the rom drive up so i can install an operating system...there currently is none.

Ok, then where are you getting the 'Invalid media' message? When you've booted from a disk?

The generic ide driver on the Windows 98SE bootdisk (you can get it on bootdisk.com) should work with most drives. If this is what you're using already and it doesn't work, then you'll either have to find dos drivers for your specific drive, or you could try booting directly from a cd if your bios supports that.

I get the invalid media message whenever i try to view the drive. It lets me go to the d drive, but not use it.
Thanks for the disk tho, hopefully that'll work. Got the drivers...so time for me to get to work.
