How do you setup a computer with dual processors?
    #1665071 -

I once read that computers/servers with dual processors need to be syncronized in order to work as effectively as possible. Is this true? And if so how would you do it?

they will match speeds to the lower of the two.. you need a dual processor main board or a beowulf cluster.

It depends upon the hardware that you are using.  Most intel based configurations require a logic board that will support multiple processors.  Other hardware platforms, such as Sun Microsystems, can mix & match a bit differently... some of their higher end hardware (back when I messed with it) could support upto 64 nodes in a cluster... each node can be multi-cpu'd as well.  Things like a paragon or hypercube (intel super computers) have two cpu's per node and one communication processor per node.  A node acts as a single computational unit for light weight processes sharing threads within that processes across the processors within the node.  For the most part, multiple cpu systems are not worth the money if you are running windows.  The windows OS (even XP) is barely threaded... if one cpu is running at 100% the other will be at 0%... I run a dual processor on my home machine and it sucks with windows... running solaris x86 it rocks... Your question was a bit open ended and I rambled around a bit... if you want specifics, let me know which direction to aim...

I got dualmon at work and it is swweeet.

First you need a video card that supports it. The Matrox G450 is a fine adapter that has withstood the test of time. Maybe it won't be supported for much longer? Check if their is a newer version. Don't get no flaky ass 3d shit.

Anyhow, you get the card, install it, install the two monitors. XP should be no problem, 2003 Server is no problem, I'd assume Win2k is no problem. Just right click on your desktop, click properties (like you were changing your screen resolution) and you'll see the options.

Oh, the sweet, sweet options.

One thing, for dual processors, Windows NT and Windows2000 require a reinstall. Win9x doesn't support dual proc. I don't know if XP or 2003 Server require a reinstall, but they very well might.

Long ago I was able to get around the reinstall, but I don't remember how. You have to replace the single cpu HAL with the multi-cpu HAL. (HAL = hardware abstraction layer) I think it required extracting a different DLL off of the install CDROM and dropping it into the proper place along with a reboot. This was with NT4.0, but the concept should hold through 2k and xp. You are correct, win9x does not support multicpu, but will work on a dual processor machine... it just uses the first cpu only.

We have 2 dual processor machines running the shroomery... they rox my sox

If you are getting a dual machine you should definately use a non-windows based OS.

I don't understand why anyone would want to run dual procs on anything other than a UNIX based OS.
