man...wtf...computer question

First off I will tell you my current setup: ASUS A7N8X motherboard (333Mhz FSB, Dual DDR 400, 8X AGP) ...512MB (corsair XMS) RAM.....GeForce FX 5600...also, my case has 5 fans and I have a PCI dual fan card under my video card. Now my problem...this seems like a pretty good setup to most, but I just installed battlefield 1942 and I assumed that I could play it really well, I crank everything up and set it to 1024x768, but when I start the game (single player) it is somewhat choppy...and also when I play UT2003, I can't max it out on 1280 w/o it being slow...now what the fuck is wrong?! I have 14GB left on my drive so that wouldn't be the problem, maybe it because my drive is 3 years old? I didn't think drives have gotten much "faster" over the years though. Could anyone think of any ideas why my nice setup is performing like a 2 year old computer?!!?!?

maybe its the 333mhz? regardless of 512mb RAM and the geforce fx 5600.. i dont think the 333mhz can handle all of that memory

333Mhz FSB is considered pretty damn fast, I don't see how this would be a problem....could you elaborate?

1024*768 is a pretty high resolution to render in realtime. Realize that game consoles only render at 320*200 or something like that, you're talking about rendering 12x as much screenspace.

yea, but I'm not talking about a shitty console, I am talking about a nice PC. I should be able to run it at 1280x1024 even.

This might be stating the obvious, but make sure your drivers are updated and you have the latest patches and whatnot. Run some benchmark software to see if your card is having problems.

ati can suck my weiner....I think I found out the main problem though....I had my AGP aperature set at 128MB, and my card has 256MB, I turned it down to 32 and games play significantly better.

Do you have the latest Nvidia drivers for your geforce?
http://www.nvidia.com
I get alot of questions from people with nice systems getting low framerates with 3d games. 95% of the time they have old drivers.

Drives have gotten much faster over the last couple of years. Lots of newer drives have 8 megs of buffer RAM instead of just 2, which is the older standard. A 7200 RPM drive with 8 megs of buffer is pretty fast Also, drive controllers have a lot more throughput now. You can go get a new one on a PCI card for fairly cheap. One thing that speeded my computer up a lot was putting my paging file and temp directories on a seperate drive from the OS.
