Damn computer crashes...
    #1357246 - 03/08/03 04:35 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Ok.

Every time I play Unreal Tournament 2003, my computer crashes spectacularely at some point during play. The video stops dead and the speakers put out a second or so of squealing. Then I have to hit restart.

What's pissing me off is that I can't figure out where the problem is.

My computer (the basics): 256mg ps133 sdram, athlon xp 1700+, radeon 7000 agp video, onboard audio. MB is a ECS K7S5A.

Now my room mate has the EXACT same computer except for the following: 512mg ddr ram, geforce2 agp card, and a sound blaster audigy platinum ex sound system.

His computer doesn't crash when playing UT2K3. Only mine does.

We have the exact same verson of the game (hell, same copy...) same OS, same everything aside from those three peices of hardware.

So I'm assuming it's something to do with those peices of hardware. I just ordered 512mb of DDR ram and a GeForce 4 card, so I'm hoping that fixes it up.

The other possibility is the onboard audio that I'm using. I don't really like onboard audio. Could the audio chip be the cause of the crash?

You're running a microsoft operating system aren't you? Crashes are to be expected.

First off, I am assuming that there are no messages displayed indicating any problems. If there are, these should be looked into.

Next, try this: Go to the 'Control Panel', double click on 'System,' select the 'Device Manager' tab and look for any question marks, red x's or something similar. If you have anything like this a device may not be properly installed (either hardware or software wise). Sometimes there is a conflict with devices sharing the same resources. If the system will not manually allow you to change the settings for a particular device, the easiest recourse is to try moving the device to another PCI slot in your computer. Before doing this, try remving the device from the device manager, shut down your computer and then relocate the hardware into another slot. Get your installation disk(s) handy (you may or may not need them) restart the computer and let windows detect the device and re-install it.

Another thing you might try is going to the manufacturer's web sight and see if there are any patches or updated drivers. I have had situations like this where installing an updated driver or patch has resolved the problem.

Hope this helps.

Are you overclocking? I had that same problem on Red Faction, turned out my processor was overheating. I had to reduce the clock speed back to normal.

The k7s5a's memory controller dosnt like using PC133 ram, try switching ram with your buddy and youll find his computer will crash all the time and yours wont.

I've built 100's of systems with that mobo, and thats the only complaint i have with that motherboard, other then this small problem its an exellent motherboard.

There's no problems I can tell with the setup of the system, and there are no software problems. It's definately some hardware combo I have going.

The ECS K7S5A has got to be the most unstable motherboard on sale. Check this out for a start.

Well of course, do a search for any motherboad and just about all youll come up with is the ppl with problems, the others will be reviews...

Rarly do ppl goto a fourm without a problem to go and post that their computer (or whatever) is working fine. Just like when running a buisness your rarly hear from the ppl that are really satisified with your service, you only hear from the ones having problems.

ECS happens to make 97% of the all the motherboard made BTW, meaning they make the mobos for A-Bit, asus, and many others

The ECS boards are essentially the same as PC Chips Mobos, except the mobo is black and the PC Chips version (830LMR) is yellow.
I've got the PC Chips version, running XP1700+, 512 DDR, and I'm currently running GF4 Ti4200 and a Soundblaster 5.1  Live.
I had loads of problems with locking up using GFX and/or processor intensive apps (FPS, DVD ripping, MP3 ripping etc).

What temp is your cpu running at?
My 1700+would regularly fall on it's arse over about 55C, due to the manufacturer fitting an unsuitable heatsink so I changed the heatsink and applied arctic silver III as the thermal goo and lo and behold I had stability!

Do you get locking up with any other processor intensive applications?
If so I'd say it sounds like an overheating problem, the other common causes seem to be an under performing PSU or dodgy RAM - sadly I ended up buying a new PSU, more RAM and the Soundcard trying to solve a problem which was simple overheating :frown:
The other cause might be GFX drivers, but this manifests itself much more on nvidia boards than ATI.

Thie site: http://www.stud.fernuni-hagen.de/q3998142/pcchips/ has a brilliant forum which was very helpful in solving my problems

Go to rage3d.com get latest drivers and search the forums, i used to post there very often (ATI geek ) before finding the shroomery, still using a Radeon DDR.
The problem is the videocard support, the 7000 is a DX7 series card, this particular model lack Hyper Z and a T&L unit contrary to the DDR series and 7500 series (on the R100 range i mean). The problem is that some games particullary DX8 and DX9 games think that the card indeed have hyper z and T&L when it doesn't.
Regarding UT2003 you could try editing the UT2003.ini file under the UT2003\system folder, search for a subsection on the script referring to something like "[D3DRenderDevice.....]", It has two lines one about hardware pixel shaders (hwdPS) and the other about hardware vertex shader (hwdVS), turn both to "false". Take the other lines as example, it's simply a setting configuration where you turn things on and off. I don't have the game right now and i can't give you precise names, so feel free to post the ut2003.ini file or PM it to me, it' gets easier that way.

In addition to what other people have said, maybe your power supply is too weak, and maybe you need ventilation. Your computer could be overheating.

It was the ram  :smirk:

I upgraded to 512 DDR ram and a GeForce4 MX card. No more crashes

Plus UT2k3 looks awesome

Nice buy.
Of course i would recomend a Radeon 9100 for that price range, plus it's full DX 8.1 compatible, anyway don't listen to the geek  .
