Dual Channel DDR
    #3797312 - 02/18/05 08:27 AM (12 years, 11 days ago)

I just got a new motherboard and processor
Tidalwave t12 motherboard
pentium 4 3.0ghz prescott processor

using everything else from my old computer
Problem is my old ram wont work right. Only one stick of ram will work at a time. The board says it is designed for dual channel ddr. My ddr is pc2700 i dont know about the dual channel. Is there a single channel ddr? Im not sure, if I should buy some new ram, or send the board back.

Check for a possible mainboard flash update.

Dual channel means the system accesses two different sticks at once, treating them both as seperate channels. Are your old memory sticks both the same size, speed, and timing settings? They have to be to run in dual channel mode. There should, however, be a way to use them both in single channel mode. Try putting them in slots 1 and 3 if you've been using 1 and 2, or vice versa.

Yeah all the dual-channel boards I have seen can run in single-channel mode, so try putting both RAM sticks into the same channel.

To run dual-channel BOTH sticks have to be EXACTLY the same speed and such. Even when both sticks are the same speed, I have seen people with two different brands (but same speed) not working together in dual-channel mode. Your best bet to use dual-channel DDR is to buy two of the SAME stick of RAM at the same time, so you can be sure they match up.

I shelled out a few extra bucks and got a set of OCZ memory sticks that are specifically paired together for dual-channel mode.

You've felt it your entire life.
That there's something wrong with the world.
You don't know what it is, but it's there....
Like a splinter in your mind...
Driving you mad.
