Constitutional ammendment banning gay rights?

President Bush, reacting to a new Massachusetts state court ruling, says a constitutional amendment will be necessary to ban gay marriages if judges persist in approving them. "Marriage is a sacred institution between a man and a woman," he said in the statement. "If activist judges insist on redefining marriage by court order, the only alternative will be the constitutional process. We must do what is legally necessary to defend the sanctity of marriage."
What do you guys think?

I think the government should butt out of marriage (and a whole lot of other things).

when I think about all the other constitutional amendments we desperately need (such as a Balanced Budget amendment) the fact that Bush is wasting time on this really pisses me off.

Actually no, the orginal ten amendments granted nothing, they were intended as explicit limits on government power. Rights pre-exist governments according to the concept of 'Natural Rights,' which the founders embraced.

Judging by many of your posts, that's obvious.

I just disagreed with the teacher. if rights are nothing more than something legally granted to you by the authorities in power, they are nothing at all. (and whether you agreed with your teacher or not, it is a fact that the founding fathers believed in the idea of natural rights)

I guess I should've said I disagree with the founding fathers. Not that I don't appreciate what they did--I just disagree with the premise of Natural Rights, as I have explained before. But to keep the thread on-topic, I will not go any further into that.

I believe in the premise of natural rights, but I believe those rights end when they inflict harm on people or society.
